The 9001 is a pretty good sounding preamp, and its got a nice tube tone,if you keep good tubes in it,my friend got one used, and it sounded pretty bad, whacked some new tubes in it and it sounded pretty nice,he doesnt use it for really heavy distortion though. But i dunno if it is a whole lot more 'brutal' than a 9004,im sure you can find alot more 'brutal' sounding pre- amps out there

get something with WAY more gain and WAY more balls!
you're dutch right? try www.gitaarmarkt.nl.
if you've got 500 to spend, theres a fucking Mesa QUAD preamp on there. it's a steal (I know, its a bunch of money but its a great preamp.) theres also an Engl 520 on there, 3 channel brutal monster! it's 290 or something. (I used to own the 620 untill I bought an Engl top)
it kinda depends what you want to spend too if you're into marshall I'de consider the jmp-1

i dont have any money to spend actualy, and i got the 9001 damn cheap so i just bought it, its better than what i had anyway, so i think its a good preamp to start with.
if i ever get rich il probaly get some sick amp but this woil have to last for the next 2 years or so

the only marshall pre with good high gain distortion is the jmp-1 imo.. the others are more chunky medium gain style distortions. the jmp-1 also does those sounds as well as good clean sounds better too.

abnyway, i like the lead chanel for solos, and im still using my mt2 over it wioth the equalizer on, make the sound of the mt2 much better than before.
in other words in happy with it and in gonna save some money up so i can buy a realy good preamp in a few years anyone ever played a mb triaxis?? my guitar teacher has 1 and that sound fucking awesome

the triaxis is pretty much the same concept as the jmp-1... an authentic library of marshall tones controllable via midi, except the triaxis is for mesa/boogie tones instead of marshall ones.
good preamp... personally i'd rather have the quad though...
