emg config...

ok, im planning to get a set of emgs for my guitar, and i kno im going to sound like such a newb saying this, but i want tones similar to slayer and chimaira. i no the tones rely a lot on the amp and other parts of the set up but i just want to get as close as possible to them.
which pickups should i get, an 81/81 or 81/85? or even 81/60? i dont kno what config those bands use or similar ones.

cheers

81 bridge and 85 neck, your playing will be the main thing to worry about if your trying to sound like them. But yeah your amp and effects ect have a hella big part to do with it.but man you should be going for your own tone.

i like the 60, there coming out with a new 60 i think itll be a bit warmer. i dunno

here it is at emginc.com

EMG-60A

The EMG-60A features the close aperture coils loaded with alnico magnets instead of ceramic, giving it warmer and fuller sound. This pickup still packs plenty of output with both clarity and cut through high end. The EMG-60A is incredible for rhythm guitar and sets any player apart in the mix of a band that pumps a lot of mid-range from the stage.

If you want to sound as close as possible to Slayer or Chimaira, get an amp with a CD-in, turn your guitar volume off (or better yet, unplug it), and pipe a Slayer or Chimaira disc through your amp while you finger-synch.

Yeah, and don't worry about the vocals, drums and bass coming out of your amp. Lets just call it advanced techniques and show-off shredding tricks :P

cool, thanks for the feedback
is there anypoint of getting 81/81, ino nothing about pickups, but wouldnt it sound the same when you select both or just the neck or just the bridge. if ya get what i mean? like whether you have both selected or just one or the other, wouldnt it produce the same sound?
sorry, its late...

The bridge pickup's sound different to neck pickups, but i wouldnt get two 81's its pretty pointless,i think kirk hammet has two 81's in his guitars.

Yea, the 60 has the best cleans, toss it in the neck and like an 81 at the bridge, and you get a very versatile configuration.

the way i look at it...

the 81 and 85 are good in both neck and bridge positions, while the 60 imo is pretty much a neck only pickup as far as i'm concerned.

the question about it being pointless about two 81's... alot of the sound has to do with the placement of the pickup. so though they are still the same pickup they'll still sound drastically different.

the 85 is more of a shred/solo/brownsound pickup in the neck position, which is awesome for thickening up single notes. in the bridge it's a bit more beefy and thick sounding than the 81, like comparing a ibanez s series to a gibson les paul. both great, but one is drastically bassier and more ballsy. so it depends on the guitar it's in if it's going to be muddy or not.

the 81 makes a good thick rythem chordy type pickup in the neck, and a great all around medium/high output bridge pu, which is why it's the most popular in the bridge.

the 60 in the bridge imo is horrible, but in the neck it's very very clean sounding.

so i'd say either an 81 or 85 in the bridge, just depends on the guitar though..

what do you want from your neck pickup? solo tone, rythem,or cleans?
