Analog/Microphone Setup

If anyone cares, I've just bought a "Shure SM57" instrument microphone. I had to get a XLR-1/4" cable because I've got it plugged into a newly purchased (used) tascam portastudio II (analog 4 track).

I've been experimenting with mike placement outside of my 2x12 cab and am trying to find optimal placement. I was told that there would be a 50% signal loss due to the cable so the retailer suggested a transformer to boost it back to normal. I didn't buy it but I do have to crank the amp up a bit to compensate.

It sounds pretty damn good for casette. Anyone else have an analog/mike setup?

Yeah I have that same problem. I just went to a general electric store and got a transformer for 50 cents and its working as if I had a normal setup through my board. Its obviously worth it. I mainly use it for my acoustic. And I can actually hear the music now. Not too much noise.
