The thread for finding a certain sound
How about a thread for finding the right sound.
So If people want it, this is the thread for asking "how do I get THAT sound" and the thread for posting "this is how you get THAT sound".
This is the thread about going into details about settings, eq's, to get that certain sound you want, when playing covers, and shit like that.
For example -
How to sound like slayer with a MZ-2
Slayer
LEVEL 12:00
HIGH 3:00
LOW 5:00
MID-FREQUENCY 1:00
MID 7:00
DIST 12:00
Is this a bad idea? If yes - then fuck it.

bad idea...cuz for starters, the sound depends hugely on the amp you are using. so if the settings work for you, that does not necessarily mean that the same settings should work for someone else.

basic death metal setting, i have used this setting on most guitars and amp settups i have used and it usualy has the same results, just different guitar tone, its pretty basic though, based on a 1-10 knobb
bass=8
mid=1(or zero depends)
treb=10(sometimes 9)
and some super distortion, i use a dod death metal pedal, i havnt found another pedal that suplies me with enough distortion, even though i have heard much about some they just didnt work for some reason,
this setting is very comparable to GRAVE, and alot of oldschool death metal, even some new stuff too. i like it

I think this is a pretty good idea, even though it won't get many people spot on with their fav bands tone. It'll be good because 1) newbs who want to sound f0ck1ng br00t4l might come here and ask instead of cluttering up the forums, and 2) it might give said newbs something to try before asking so they may never ask, and 3) it may be useful for people who want to find out what certain tones "consist" of.
I don't have much to contribute though, except for one thing. Avoid scooping your mids, you will have a very hard time cutting through the mix.

I use a Crate GLX 212 and a metal master distortion pedal.
Crate-
Low: 6
Mid: 5
High: 5
Metal Master-
Low: 7
High: 5
Morph: 6 1/2
When I jam with friends, this is the setting I use the most. It lets my lead playing stand out from the Rythm whenever I decide to shred abit.

you aint gonna get very far playing in a band with those settings if you dont have any mids, mainly because you won't be able to cut through the mix,

Mid = Note definition, it's also like the chainsaw effect on your eq. It adds more grind to your sound.

both bright and normal gain knobs at 3
bass: 7-8
mid: 9-10
treble: 6-7
other than that, i use a zoom 2020, a digitech metalmaster, and an ibanez tubescreamer, and if anyone gives a shit, later i will post all the settings on those

I use a Crate vintage, and I usually have it like 10, 10, 10, that seems to evoke the most heavyness from my amp, but when I play punk for bands I usually turn the gain down a little, and the treble and bass.

peavey 5150 combo
high input (crunch and bright on)
rhythm gain: 6-7
low:4
mid:10
high:8
resonance:5-6
presence:8.5
boss SD-1 super overdrive
level: three o' clock
tone: 10 - 12 o' clock
gain: min.
Thats my settings for my rhythm and lead sounds. It's pretty close to a CoB/sinergy tone, but with a bit more gain and a tighter low end for better pm's.

You should be fucking shot...
I don't have just one setting, whenever I play somewhere different I have to re-eq because of teh different acoustics of the rom.

rofl. he should, fucking scooping mids on a powerball.
I do what dead does, but my basic settings stay the same, I have to mess around with presence and tone controls everytime I play on stage, it allways sounds a tad different in a bigger room (or mic'd) I never ever have my mids below 5 though, mids=tone.

It's the guitar equivalent of wearing a tight "Frankie Says Relax" t-shirt.

Thats some funny shit right there.
I fiddle with my eq alot
Bass: 4-7
Mid: 3-5
Treble: 7-10
I used to use mid=0, but I have since realised that mid is good if you get a decent balance. No mid give you a dull tone in my opinion.

if your mids are at 2 thats pretty much almost 0 with a slight touch of mids in there, but you do agree it sounds good right?those are pretty much my settings on my amp, but my pedal is kind of different, its pretty much the same though, but no mids for me, and i tried this whole mids= tone definition crap, and i tried different combos involving mids in front of my singer, and i said"what do you think about that?" he didnt say a word he just went over to the mids knobb and turned them down, i said "thats what i thought" so i dont know, you guys dont like taking out the mids, but for some reson its the only thing that works for me.

I used to scoop the mids to get a super non-fuzzy palm mute that just hummed, a la And Justice... but then I noticed that if I accepted a bit of fuzz/crunch in the palm muting I could get a much better sound by having the mids 4 or higher.

the more mid i had on my amp the worse it sounded. There was no clarity to the sound so i basically went through 1-10 on the mid setting and found it best at 2 maybe 3 at best.

I dont find that its always amps/pedals which add mid frequencies to your tone. I remember playing a gibson sg into a marshall superlead and it was near enough scooped and it didnt sound very lacking in clarity or whatnot. It must be the sg. Anyways, it is still a very good idea to add mids, i remember being a stupid beginner and i used to have no mids, but when it came to playing in a band you soon realise you need a fair amount (atleast 4/5 minimum) of mids to cut through the mix and sound good.
