muting single strings...
Beginners question:
When I play something like this:
-----------
-----------
------0----
----2---0--
--0--------
-----------
If I play the different notes simply after each other (with distortion on) it sounds horrible because the different notes overlap each other. How do I correctly mute (technique?!?) each single string so that each note sounds only for itself? I could palm mute all of them but I want to play them openly.
Thx a lot!

Well if you're not going to palm mute it, then you're going to have the notes 'overlapping' each other. Either palm mute it or switch to a cleaner tone.

well you surely don't have to palm mute them to hear them individualy althought that is a nice effect that you might want to do.
To hear them individualy but also open u have to mute them somehow after playing each note. Not palm mute them. By mute here i mean making stop vibrating so that you can make each note vibrate at a time.
Simply remove your finger from the fret after playing each note but do not remove your finger completly and all of a sudden, otherwise you will do a pull-off. The "0" notes i usualy mute them with my right hand instead of the left hand. I simply mute the string with the side of my thumb while im playing the next note a string below.
To mute an open string when the next note is above i find it more complicated. Anyway, I myself, in this case, mute the open string with the left finger that is pressing the note above.
This is what works for me. i hope i could help u

Mute it is the only way. Very fast, like doing a Pinch Harmonic, but just not doing one.

Yea thats how you do sweeps, just take your finger off of the string you just played, the opposite of a chord. If you play lots of chords, you might find this concept difficult, I did for quite some time. Or palm muting would kinda work I guess. But I think SlayedJeasus said it best.

I think in that particular case:
-----------
-----------
--------0--
-----2----0
--0--------
-----------
I would actually mute the first note with my index finger on the fretting hand as I play the second note and maybe use the same finger to mute the third note. But you cant do that everywhere since you could catch a harmonic. Depends how fast I play it.
You could try playing it like:
------------
------------
------------
--------5---
-----7-----5
--5---------
which would make it easier to to do in a sweep-stylie sort of way

Thanks a lot guys that was exactly what I wanted to know. I knew that one could probably mute the note by simply lifting your finger but the "0"s got me off completely....
Ill try the different techniques you mentioned. Thx!
