Flatwound Strings
I broke a string during band practice today, and went out and bought some flatwound strings.
These strings are GODLY. They feel very smooth and sound nice too.
Have any of you ever used these type of strings?!

i have a set of hybrid strings on my acoustic, the unwound are tin plated steel, the A, D, and G strings are flat wound/silk wound, and the low E is round wound/silk wound. silk wound is where there is a layer of silk between the winding and the steel core.

I have....I used to like them a good bit....but they don't quite have the tone of a Roundwound IMO. They are cool though if they work for you, but I would neve mess with them again. What brand are you using? I messed around with Daddario's and Elixirs....both are pretty good.

I think I know what kind of strings you are talking about. I need to get a new set of strings for my acoustic. They are shot to shit... or maybe its the guitar....

Flatwounds are really meant for Jazz I believe.

flatwounds arent meant for any specific style, they are just often used in jazz because of the warmer sound they give. i use them on my acoustic because of the reduced tension

True, there are advantages to flat-wounds, such as less fret wear, faster picking and sliding as one other poster mentioned. But I just can't see myself wrenching out Wylde-ish pinch harmonics on strings that seem so 'tame'.
Is'nt the string tension lighter, than with roundwounds? Because if so, I don't imagine I could use those, given my quasi-baritone guitar tuning.

I just love the feel of them most of all, they play real nice.
I'm currently using D'addarios, the only reason why I came across them was because the shop didn't have any other kind of electric guitar strings for electric today in this shop. I had never heard of them before.

heavier strings, all you would need are heavier gauges, they arent as slack as 10's in C standard, they are just a bit softer feeling, not a whole lot of reduced tension.

I was looking for heavy strings to be able to tune down to C while maintaining the tension I was used to (.11s in Eb), and the music store I went to didn't have anything heavier than .11s. But after a bit of looking around in that store I found some D'Addario "Chrome" strings that were .13-.56, so I bought them. When I strung up the guitar, I was quite suprised, because I had got flatwounds (never knew they existed). But they felt really nice (except .56 wasn't heavy enough for the low C IMO), so I kept them on and really grew to like them. Nowadays though, that guitar is in drop D, so I use .10s on it (I've begun adjusting myself towards lower tension, just because that's how most other people prefer their guitars, and it's annoying to only be able to play on your own guitar), but I've got a set of .13-.56 flatwounds lying around so if I ever get the urge....
