eminence swamp thangs! my review...

so i just got four of these bad boys for christmas..... dave at avatar hooked me up hella big time...

so far i've only tried them out in one of my cabs... of the three two are the same, vintage 80's ported peavey 4x12's(one with celestion g12t-75's and two vintage 30's)... the other is an 80's(yes i'm stuck on 80's cabs) crate cab, nice one though, loaded with celestion g12t-75's(this is the one i use for most gigs and leave at the band space because it's lighter and smaller but still rocks.)

so i have them on one of the ported cabs, they sound incredible.. i dare say it's now probably my favorite sounding cab ever... like holy crap even before i broke them in they sounded so huge. the porting helps alot too...

these things are rated at 150w a peice, which i thought was insane at first, but i'm kinda glad now.
a cab with 600w handling (1200w peak) is just friggin crazy. no breakup, very transparent in a sense because they're so clean. the lows are so tight and in your face, no muddyness at all, these things just don't fart.. the highs are very smooth and the mids are very balanced in the mix.

i give these things a serious A+++. so far i've put in a few hours on them at volumes ranging from 1-10 with 100w+ heads including a 5150, fender rocpro 1000, jcm 900, and a crate g1600 xl. it made them all sing.

and omg were they reasonably priced... i haggled with dave, and got em for like $250-ish for the four. which is like the price of four used vintage 30's or g12t-75's.

so if you want reasonably priced and amazing sounding speakers check out the new eminence lines, especially the swamp thangs.

www.avatarspeakers.com is the best place online to buy new celestion and eminence speakers. you don't even know.

i'm not sure, um... i know if you have a stereo cab with 16 ohm speakers you can either have it 4 or 16 ohm mono or 16 ohm per side... but most speakers for guitar rigs these days are 8 or 16 ohm.

you could check ebay or something for 4 ohm speakers.

so, turning this into a thread about cabs, if i have a 4 by 12 cab, i can just replace the speakers and turn it into the cab of my dreams, correct? no point buying an expensive cab, i can just get some good speakers for a much better price?

+1

not all cabs are created equal... the difference in the build of a mesa recto slant cab(per se) is very much different from say, a behringer 4x12... sure you could buy a new behringer for like $200 and then spend like $350 on 4 new vintage 30's(same speakers that are in recto cabs) equaling a total of only $550 on that cab as opposed to $800 on a new recto 4x12... but will it sound exactly like a mesa recto cab? fuck no.... it might sound better or worse to your ears.

but yes you can have any cab you want and load it with different speakers if you arent content with the sound of the ones already in it.

heres a pic of my ported peavey cab(empty)...

If these are as good as you say they are, xdx, for the price, I'll have to get a 4x12 from Avatar.
