Crate gx-15 upgrade

hey, I have this really samll 15 amp pactice amp (crate gx-15) that i LOVE the distortion on but as i said its really tiny and i wanted something slightly more versatile. So my question is, will pretty much any amp in the crate GX series sound the same tone and distortion wise? or if anybody has ever used this amp im looking to buy a head that has this tone and distortion so id really appreciate some suggestions thanks.

they should all be voiced very similarly if they're in the same series, if anything i'd say the upper models should sound better...

i know a dude with a gx220t, it's pretty good...

Well, I won't tell you what to get, BUT, I will steer you away from the Crate amps. They tend to develop problems (a 'burping' sound from my buddy's amp. Never did solve it... loose knobs, etc). May I suggest Marshall's AVT series. I've got an AVT 50 and its great. But I won't tell you what to get, like I said. Just go to a local gear shop and try it out for yourself.

not all crates have that problem... the only ones i've really had any troubles with are the gfx's, in my beggining days i had a gfx30, peice of shit, but it was an amp and i got it for free. the cleans would breakup uncontrolably, and the distortion was kinda thin and woofy, the fx stopped working, except when on the distortion channel they were always present... my drummer had the same amp, and the same things happend to it...

but those problems you described could happen to any amp, especially low end s.s. stuff.

other than that i actually have alot of good to say about crate, especially the older s.s. stuff and all of their tube amps.

i hate avt's... they're just a scam to sell shitty amps for more money because they have a tube in the preamp, it's not even a true tube preamp, it just has one in there adding gain and "warmth"(yeh right). and kids think if it has a tube in it then it's the best thing ever.
you can't even tell, the majority of noticable tube charateristics come from tube poweramps.
but their sound just isnt all that and a bag of potato chips imo.

Fine, mate, I'll send you one of my band's demos, then you can tell me their gain is shit. I can get great tones out of it. Nevermind, I don't feel like getting into an arguement about something unrelated to the kids question. Its a matter of opinion, and I have no idea where you got yours, but hey, thats your perogative.

If you get a crate, make sure its a high end model. The low end models tent to sound like shit.

send it to me... i'm down... i never said the gain is shit on them, i just said i don't like them, they have plenty of gain to them, but they can sound kinda shrill in the highs and muddy in the lows, with a sort of natural scoop(it's just the way they're voiced).
not my kind of sounds.
besides, he said he likes the way his crate sounds and is looking for something bigger and louder but similar sounding.and avt is not that by any stretch of the imagination

tone is in your head...
they don't suck to bad, but i'd personally take many a crate over an avt.

a crate GX130c would be a sound investment, or a GT100 stealth.

i love the way it sounds... but it's eqing is really wacky... the knobs on the lead channel are, "sub" which is kinda like a low knob, but not really, more like a resonance know and low mid all in the same knob. then "focus" kinda like a buzz/chrunch knob if that makes any sense, like all the way down and it sound light and creamy, all the way up it sounds very tight and buzzsaw like. and then "lead" which works like a high/mid control, then gain(distortion) and level(volume).
i normally had the focus and gain dimed, then the sub and lead at like 2, with the volume where ever you i needed it.

but in the end it sounds great to me... very interesting controls, needs to be fucked with alot to get the right sounds. but capapble of alot, the cleans are decent...
