Sucking Quality Out of what You've Got...

Alright, boys and Transient, I've got a question: We are recording mics directly into my drummer's computer. What would be the best way to get more quality in post-recording?

use some kind of program to mix it and then compress....get rid of the inevitable spikes that'll occur in a direct to digital recording

When it comes to gear and guitar, the man knows his shit. Otherwise, I don't like him, and I know he doesn't like me. See, we understand this, and we both ignore any banter from the other in order to aviod bitch-fits like AssBehemoth.

I don't have a mixer, but I'll spend a few days editing our shit with my drummer.

something to remember when laying down tracks

once is a mistake
twice is worrisome
thrice is a problem. once you get past 3 tries stop for five minutes. your perforance will only continue to get worse.....

be creative when youre editing on the computer....try different eq settings...it really makes a difference

what are you going to use?

i use acid pro(also pirated) i had a demo of cool edit, it was pretty cool(no pun) for what i had to work with. i dig acid though. the only thing that bugs me about acid is whenever you record something it will automatically save a file of it...im sure theres a way to turn that off but i havent really looked into it

I forget what my drummer uses, but we are using his program->Computer->Soundcard/Line-In-> One of two things:

RCA Cable->Amp->Etc.
<or>
Mic->Etc.

I'll talk to him about it.

protools is the best... industry standard in digital studios. see if you can't get a pirated copy or cheaper version... even the old freeware demo thing they used to have was killer...

alot of it is still like black magic to me, but after dicking with it for awhile you get used to it.
