Your top five of the year.
Mine would be (somewhat in order):
Pain of Salvation "BE"
Borknagar "Epic"
Winds "The Imaginary Direction of Time"
Dragonforce "Sonic Firestorm"
Age of Silence "Acceleration"
Too bad I just got the new Ayreon and Flower Kings yesterday. I haven't had a chance to listen to them, but they would probably have replaced some of these.

Overall, I think 2003 was a better year for metal, but all in all 2004 was a good year.

What did Decapitated release this year? I didn't know they released anything, as far as I know their last album is The Negation. They easily make my 2003 list, which looks like this-
1. Morbid Angel- Heretic
2. Monstrosity- Rise to Power
3. Yattering- Genocide
4. Misery Index- Retaliate
5. Decapitated- The Negation
All death metal, too, if you'll notice. Like I said, I really think 2003 was a stronger year than '04, but '04 was decent in it's own right.

I've been planning on buying that Bjork cd for a while. Leviathan gets an honorable mention from me as well as Evergrey "The Inner Circle" and My Dying Bride "Songs of Darkness, Words of Life". Has no one else heard any Pain of Salvation or "BE" in particular? I realize this isn't exactly a prog haven, but it's easily the best thing to come out in 2004.

Yeah. My friend was one of those people on that record who left those messeges to God. I think he was the last one.
And I better see some people update their list with Augury. YOU BETTER!

Yeah, he was fucking stoaked out of his mind - being a huge fan of theirs and all. Apparently, they just gave a number out on their site and anyone who called in and left a message to God would be put on the album.

1. Paysage d'Hiver - Nacht (demo)
Amazing release, very cold and hypnotic stuff which forces one to listen it again and again.
2. Katharsis - Kruzifixxion
I found this as the one of the best releases ever, though the music is quite clearly influenced from early Darkthrone CDs, it is very good.
3. SVEST - Urfaust
In its all (structured) chaoticness a masterpiece release.
4. Velvet Cacoon - Genevieve
Strange material these guys make, though it's total quality!
5. Peste Noire - Phalènes et Pestilence-Salvatrice Averse (demo)
This too was a totally suprising release, black metal where solos actually fit in the music, and even make the music better.

5. HimsA - Courting Tragedy and Disaster
Honorable Mentions:
Norma Jean - Bless The Martyr and Kiss The Child (or was it the other way around?)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Avenged Sevenfold - Waking The Fallen
Unearth - The Oncoming Storm

I just wanted to add another album. Emperor- Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. Sure, technically it didn't come out this year, but it only came out 7 years ago. This album rocks my socks. Since I rock your mom's (and sister's, if applicable) socks, that's saying a lot, bitches.

I found it to be a very dissapointing year. Decapitated, Suffocation and Immolation all bored me to tears when I was expecting SO much. Fractured is boring and generic, which is a shock considering Mongrain is a genius.
I really can't say I listened to anything all that recent. Just lots and lots of Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Gentle Giant and other great prog acts!
Cheers!

I'd disagree with your comment on Fractured. Fractured seems to be the epitome of perfectly mixed technicality with songwriting. Give it another listen. How is Perpetuating Catatonia boring!?

I noticed some of you picked Lamb of gods ashes of the wake. I dont see why, the album sucks compared to their other ones. Its still good but it sounds to mainstream influenced.

My top five of 2004:
Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden
Mastodon - Leviathan
Vader - The Beast
Shadows Fall - The War Within
Honorable mentions (a helluva lot of 'em!):
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Machine Head - Through the Ashes of Empires
Finntroll - Nattfodd
The Crown - Crowned Unholy
Impaled Nazarene - All That You Fear
Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn
My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light
Rammstein - Reise, Reise
Chaosbreed - Brutal
Unearth - The Oncoming Storm
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
and I just recently picked these up, if I had them for a little longer to digest, they'd probably end up somewhere in my list:
Behemoth - Demigod
Krisiun - Bloodshed

I'm not going to list the obvious (or should I say what I feel my obvious picks would be), Karl Sanders, Suffo, Corpse, Deicide, etc. Just because I can't confine it to a limited list. But I will give out an honorable mention for Mastadon's Leviathan, I must say I am quite impressed.
