at the moment i have tried recording my amp by micing up my cab with a SM57 with an xlr to 1/4 convertor then a 1/4 to 1/8 socket convertor to plug into my mac via a iMic(usb audio which supports line levels)...the problem is low quality recordings are being produced.

could someone help me out and tell me a) what im doing wrong and b) how to sort it out.

I am now under the impression i need a microphone preamp? can anyone give me more information on this?>

i would suggest a mixer, even if it's a cheapo $50 2 channel behringer one like this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...ase_pid/631238/... the preamping and eqing abilities will help out a ton.

make sure you have high enough impedence to get decent quality...i'd probably also use some sort of EQ or compressor.

The mixer idea is also a very good one

The volume is fine on the recording, it just sounds really distored but not if you get me (i dont get it myself )

its hard to get a clean recording.
