Hmmm, Pantera- Domination has a pretty cool breakdown
Also Cannibal Corpse- They deserve to die is pretty cool. The singer sreams die for like 15 seconds straight with a realy heavy riff under it at the end.

Megadeth-Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
Exodus-Deliver Us To Evil
Overkill-Struck Down
Struck Down has pretty much the best breakdown I've ever heard.

Souls to Deny off their recent opus of the same name also has a fantastic breakdown, but it still pales into comparison when compared to Liege of Inveracity.

Yeah, Demise of the Clone's breakdown is great, too, but like you said, it pales next to LoI.

Death - Leige of Inveracity
Thrash- Holy Wars or Domination
Im not a big fan of breakdowns.... Hardcore kids go crazy during breakdowns, Thrashers go crazy during fast parts.

It's hard to describe. A breakdown is when the music slows down a bit and gets extra heavy, usually contains blast beats with the double bass and breaks in the music. Its a perfect time to mosh and headbang in the song, but most songs don't contain them.
Vehemence - The Last Fantasy of Christ

Which part are you talking about? I think most of us are referring to this absolute behemoth:
Code:
|-------------------|----------------|----------------------|
|-------------------|----------------|----------------------|
|-------------------|----------------|----------------------|
|-------------------|----------------|----------------------|
|-2--22-3/4\3-2--22-|-3/4\3-6--3-2-3-|-2--22-3/4\3-2-3-2222-|
|-0--00-1/2\1-0--00-|-1/2\1-4--1-0-1-|-0--00-1/2\1-0-1-0000-|
.. .. . .. . ....
|----------------|----------------------|-----------------------|
|----------------|----------------------|-----------------------|
|----------------|----------------------|---------------"-------|
|-------4--------|----------------------|---------------2-------|
|-6-2-3-2-2-3333-|-2--22-3/4\3-6--3-2-3-|-2--22-3/4\3-2---3-2-3-|
|-4-0-1---0-1111-|-0--00-1/2\1-4--1-0-1-|-0--00-1/2\1-0---1-0-1-|
.... .. . ..
I can't see how anybody can find that boring especially since it is so rhythmically complex.

If we are talking death metal, my vote goes to Gorguts "Considered Dead".
Damn near every song on that CD has at least 2 or 3 awesome breakdowns, each one more badass than the last.
That CD impressed the hell out of me way back when it first came out and it still does today (even though it sounds a little dated). It is just more proof that 90% of the "death metal" today is absolute shit compared to what was happening in the genre 10-15 years ago.

The Erosion of Sanity does too, they are both classics. But you can't possibly expect the metal scene to be releasing classics as much now as back then when death metal was still fairly new.

I can think of way better Suffocation breakdowns than the one in Liege of Inveracity. Here's a list of the breakdowns that sound better in my opinion. An asterisk denotes the breakdowns that are more complex. Any without one can be considered either equal or (slightly) lesser to LoI's breakdown in complexity. Also, since a breakdown often consists of more than one riff and/or figure, assume I always refer to only the one riff or figure that starts at the times marked unless otherwise noted in parentheses.
1:34 in Human Waste
1:25 in Effigy of the Forgotten*
2:20 in Infecting the Crypts
0:28 in Seeds of the Suffering*
3:02 in Habitual Infamy
2:38 in Involuntary Slaughter
1:08 in Jesus Wept* (the whole breakdown)
1:43 in Beginning of Sorrow
3:35 in Beginning of Sorrow
1:16 in Epitaph of the Credulous*
0:45 in Marital Decimation*
2:11 in Marital Decimation
3:09 in Marital Decimation
2:10 in Prelude to Repulsion*
3:04 in Prelude to Repulsion*
3:30 in Anomalistc Offerings*
1:36 in Ornaments of Decrepancy*
3:21 in Ornaments of Decrepancy
4:07 in Ignorant Deprivation (the breakdowns in this song are so long, if it wern't for a technicality, the fast riffs should be considered the breakdown)
1:21 in Pierced from Within*
2:19 in Pierced from Within
1:16 in Depths of Depravity
2:22 in Depths of Depravity*
4:16 in Depths of Depravity*
1:15 in Suspended in Tribulation* (the whole breakdown, all 1:10 minutes of it)
5:33 in Suspended in Tribulation*
1:15 in The Invoking*
1:56 in Despise the Sun*
I'm not counting any songs off of Souls to Deny because I'm not familiar enough with the album. For the record, I don't have any of these times memorized or anything, I just know which Suffo songs had nice breakdowns in them so I searched through the songs to find the times of the breakdowns I was looking for. I was already listening to them any, so it's not big deal.
For the record, you can discredit any song not marked with an asterisk if you choose, as those are not based on complexity. I just like those better, which makes my choice of those songs subjective. Also, if there are any in the list that aren't technically breakdowns, forgive me, I'm half asleep and about to go to bed.
I love Suffocation.

What we've learnt here today, class, is that Suffocation are the undisputed kings of the breakdown.

I like Norma Jean's breakdowns. Especially on "Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste," but that whole song is basically a breakdown.

As I Lay Dying - Elegy
very very good, however, Suffo still beats it. i just figured id introduce a new one
also, Remembering Never have a tendency to constuct entire songs which are comprised of nothing but semi-complex breakdowns. i love it.

Do you honestly think that actually compares to anything Suffocation has done, or did you just feel like screaming out the name of a random Pantera song off their worst album? By the way, when I say worst album, I do mean worse than Metal Magic.

345
I never said it had anything to do with Suffocation. (wtf...???) I just think at 3:45 in that song its a cool little breakdown...regardless of it being one of Pantera's worst albums....its still a cool breakdown. Oh yah, and I am obnoxious....

I've seen a lot of your posts and I don't really think you are obnoxious, so I'm not sure why you think you are. That response was mostly because, as JohnMansley pointed out and as Nihilist conceded, Suffocation are the king of the breakdown. Basically I was fucking around with you for two reasons. First off, the breakdown you mentioned gets shit all over by the breakdowns I mentioned. Secondly, that song is off Pantera's all time worst album. I know you just felt like naming a song that had a breakdown in it that you liked, even though I'm sure you realize it isn't the best breakdown. I just felt like fucking around with you. Don't take it too personally, bud.

don't worry, I didn't take you seriously man....I just need to listen to suffocation. (I know....I should beat myself for that one probably) Sadly enough that was pantera's worst album...oh well. For some reason that breakdown has been on my head forever....in all reality though, I kinda despise breakdowns. Back home, (jacksonville, FL) those fucking hardcore kids give breakdowns a bad name.....by doing triplets all day....and sucking. No worries though....I'm a grown man....( )

I would have to say that the Great Southern Trendkill album was their worst. But Reinventing the Steel would be the next.

what was wrong with Reinventing the Steel? It was pretty good. Older stuff ruled ass though, but I didnt see anything wrong with Reinventing.

Does the bit in Slayer's Criminally Insane at 1:41 count? Anyway, it's a very cool riff.

Dying Fetus - Praise the Lord (Opium to the Masses) 4:45
Death - Misanthrope (3:01)
Lamb of God - Hourglass (1:04)
