I'm sorry about semi-hi-jacking this thread, but I really don't feel like starting a new thread for this....
Is there a set max "depth" for 19" rack units? Or is there any set interval for the depth? (Or could someone give me the depth of the deepest rack mount unit they've seen?).
And by depth I mean the third spatial dimension assuming the first two are width and height.

deepest peice of rack gear i've owned was my peavey cs 800 poweramp... 14" deep.
i suggest measuring your gear before you buy the rack... and it's always better to have a little to much room than not enough.

i've been a rack dude for awhile now...
right now i'm just using a two space rack with a head, in the rack i have a powercondishioner and a half rack tuner, then a ns-2 pedal and soon i'll also have an mxr eq in the back of it and i'll just leave them on. then i store cables and stuff in there for gigs.
so i've scaled down the rack gear...
but i've owned all sorts of crap in the past.
preamps:
marshall jmp-1(awesome everything & very flexible, i'm selling if you're interested)
bogner/hafler triple giant(decent cleans, great brown sound, kinda thin and ice picky high gain tones)
mesa vtwin rack(amazing everything, not very flexible cuz it's got no midi)
digitech valve fx(preamp tones are pretty good, great cleans, pretty decent distortions, but i mostly used for fx. i'm also still selling this if you're interested)
fx units:
digitech valve fx(loads of fx and all pretty good quality)
t.c. g major(really good sounding, very easy to use)
rocktron intellifex(sounds great, easy to use, but limiting on fx)
poweramps:
ada microtube 200(very nice sounding for a valve poweramp, colors your tone alot though, which may or may not be desired)
peavey cs800(actually a P.A. poweramp, but i found it to be one of my favorites that i've owned)
peavey classic 50/50( probably the other favorite, i'm still selling it if you want to buy it... it's all tube)
mosvalve/tubeworks 50/50(the other all tube one i've owned, pretty nice, colors tone a bit to much though...)
art sla-1(very clean and sterile, but in a good way)
odds and ends:
bbe sonic maximizer(freaking great with some amps, can really tighten up lows, clarify highs and add alot of punch)
ibanez msp-1000(such a good sounding and versitile unit, graphic eq, compression, and anotch filter)
rocktron hush super C(just a good rackmounted noise gate)
furman powercondishioner with lights (pretty much a big powerstrip with lights, very conviennient to have)
and yeh, tuners are tuners... korg would be my fav.
also, i'm selling an 8 space grundorf carpetted rack case if you or anybody is interested.

Furman Power Conditioner
Korg DTR 2000 Tuner
DOD Sr830x Dual 15 Band EQ
BBE Sonic Maximizer 462
I also have a ISP Noise Decimator.. but not the rack mount version because the rack mount has some sort of problem.. ISP even admitted this.

the biggest problem most people find is ground loops... they're making a special version for guitars with one side to go in the fx loop and the other to go before the gain source...
other than that i think the current rack ones are much superior to the pedals..
my ns-2 serves me fine.

something must be wrong with yours then... my guitarist uses his ns-2 on his 5150 and it works fine.... hell, with the gain down to like 3-4(which still hits pretty hard) it doesnt really feedback at all without a noisegate. but he normally has his at like 5-6 so the ns-2 goes in the combination.

5150's are just noisy.. exspecially cause im using passives and not EMG's(which are nice and quiet) like every other goon who owns a 5150.
plus my BBE adds ALOT of fucking feedback... like insane amounts, this annoying squeal the second I stop playing
Its not microphonic tubes.. ive checked them all. But my ISP Noise Decimator decimates all noise!
ehehehe Sam!!

he has passives too... so i'm not sure what's wrong with yours... probably just your outer equipment.
he's ditched all external devices except his guitar, head, and ns-2. we're down to basics....

what are your settings?
i can understand it getting noisey, don't get me wrong, this thing can turn into a hissy bitch, but we've yet to get it to be to bad for his ns-2.

I still have a bass rack though, H&K fortress preamp, H&K Bassbase 400, Engl 620 pre for distortion (haha), korg dtr1000 racktuner and thats it. I kinda miss my peavey 50/50 though, for its sheer power

Well I am a treble man
Bass - 6
Mids - 6
Highs - 7
Res - 2-3
Pres - 8
then I use the BBE to add some lowend and SLIGHTLY cut the mids on my rack eq

basically a "rockmounted" metal pedal that puts out preamp levels so you can run it into a big poweramp and it wont sound as shitty as a pedal into an amp. that's my opinion of it.
instead of a mid knob it has a "Scoop" knob, the more you turn it up the more it scoops. so you know it's made for nu metal.
if all you need is a one trick pony preamp then i guess it'd be alright... the clean channel is pretty much useless, as you only have a high and low control for it, no mid/scoop, gain, level, or anything else on that channel.

HAHAHA, yeah, you could check out the mesa quad or mesa formula if you have about 400-500$ laying around though. Both great preamps.
