Erwin Schrodinger was one of the main contributors to Quantum physics in the 20s and 30s. He's responsible for the wave equation of quantum particles and, as my user title implies, a thought experiment involving his now famous cat.

The thought experiment was proposed as a means to explain quantum superposition: the strange possibility born out of Quantum Mechanics whereby a particle can exist in two Quantum states at once. This means it can be in two places at the same time or spinning in opposite directions at the same time amongst other things. Anyway, the experiment goes something like this:

Imagine you have a cat and you place that cat inside a box that is then completely sealed. Inside the box is a device whereby a poison (that will kill the cat) will be released when a radioactive substance has decayed to a certain level. Now, radioactive decay is completely random so one can only say that the cat is alive or dead with a certain probability. Until we open the box it is impossible to say whether the cat is alive or dead and so, in the quantum world, the cat is both alive and dead simultaneously.

However, once the box is opened the system has been observed and it is at the exact point of observation that nature determines whether the cat is alive or dead. It mightn't be obvious from this thought experiment, but within it is one of the basic tenets of Quantum Mechanics: at the Quantum level, observing and measuring a system affects the end result.

Anyway, I just thought that Schrodinger's cat was a cool title to have, especially with the implications of being both alive and dead at the same time.
