jazz and extreme metal drumming
is it just me or does it seem like extreme metal is made up of jazz drummers who got tired of playing slow?
Flo Mounier
Gene Hoglan
Sean Reinert
Hellhammer
Richard Christy
Trym Torson
so on.....
also, polyrythm blast-beats - greatest thing ever invented

Jazz is the most extreme form of drumming as far as technique goes Metal is more about raw power and speed than technique, which is why when you get a Jazz drummer playing metal you get an incredible sound hence why a lot of metal drummers are Ex Jazz because of the awesome sound you get.
and yes Polyrhythmic blast beats are Kvlt azz Fukk shame I can't play them.....

its funny how linked jazz and metal really are, when delved deep into the idea with a racial mindset. Jazz originated in the 1920s and 30s during the depression, and was primarily an african american artform. to this day, it is primarily african american, though to a far less extent than at its conception. now, to metal. all metal drumming has some jazz in it, regardless of any circumstances. frequent use of cymbals comes from jazz, faster drumming is a jazz technique.... shit, drumming as a whole basically comes from jazz when you think about it. now, the heaviest racial irony. the lack of afircan americans in the world of heavy metal is ridiculous, when they themselves are to thank for the wonderful thing we call drumming. if not as a whole, then most certainly for the styles we all enjoy.

Um... God Forbid? There are black people in metal, but I don't know about any Asian people in metal. Metal is dominated by white men. Women in metal aren't as rare, but I really want to see a hot asian chick in a metal band, that would be so cool

you guys should check out encyclopediamettalium.com they list bands by name, country, genre usually all metal. black, death, grind metal bands from iran, isreal, pakistan, indonesia, brazil, china, korea even algeria, just about every industrialized or developing nation, they link out the band's site if one exists, its a real trip to see how influential genre defining bands can be

or its the fact that A, jazz is whats avaliable in highschool and college, not death metal or hardcore or B, jazz is one of the most important genres to learn.. all professional drummers try to learn jazz eventually

My Drumteacher is a "hardcore jazzplayer" he plays in a few jazzbands (and other styles...), and everytime I give him a cd from me (like necrophagist), he finds it awesome.

jazz is great because it hones your timing skills, ride skills and tames your ear.. the drummer for dillinger is a jazz teacher, he uses some jazz ride patterns in some of their songs.. good stuff, and when budyd rich was around there was no such thing as hardcore or the metal like today.. metal started in the 80s i believe

I wanna start learning jazz...but I have no time at the moment...I have to prove my Blastbeats and bassdrumtechnique.
But if I could I would put some more jazz in my drumming. (I´m playing in a black/death metal band)

buddy rich was alive until recently, i think he died like 7 years ago? maybe longer, grind was definately around then tho, Altho alot most obscure than now. necrophagist is good, i just looked them up, i bet any jazz drummer would be hard pressed to make sense of that. the dillinger guy uses mostly thrash if you listen closer, the grind parts are alittle weak on the first couple tracks, not talking shit, the guy rules, but he sounds like he learned jazz first, grind second, aint nothing wrong with that tho
