I play on and off all day. I'll do something, then go and play for a little bit, then I go do something else to take a break, then go play more, etc. For instance, today I've played about 2 1/2 hours all together, and after I'm done here, I'm gonna go play more.

Me about 1 - 2 hours...
A friend of mine plays 3 to 5 hours a day, he now plays 9 months and he can already play some CoB solo's and does some neat 5 string sweeps. Damnit.

A guy at my school has been playing bit over 1 year, and he plays guitar so much, not so much lately, but for like a month he played 2 hours before he went to school then as soon as he got home he played like 6 hours... he did this for ages, and he still plays quite alot now. Hes best in our school.
He can play like most metallica songs, and most metallica solo's etc. MAAAAAD!

Unless I have tons of homework, I'll play for hours every day. Even when I have tons of homework I can fit in about a half-hour. On average, I'd say 2-3 hours every day. Sometimes I'll be playing guitar at, let's say, 12:00, and then all of a sudden it's close to 2:30! Time flies by sometimes, while other times it goes slowly. I'm sure I've fit in around 4 hours before, but I've never timed my playing time. Today I've played acoustic for about 45 minutes, and I just brought my guitar downstairs to plug in(performance yesterday, so nothing is plugged in).
Deus Ex 2 is fun. San Andreas too.(sorry, where did that come from?)

Its sorta on and off for me too. Only I hardly ever go a day with out playing guitar. On an off day, I play only for like a half hour. But on a typical, I'll play for like an hour to an hour and a half.

pretty shitty. its easier at jam sessions because there is something to distract you
you "all day long"ers appreciate the fact that its physically possible

I'm out of the house from 7am to 7pm on weekdays with work, in the boozer (or at the match) on Saturdays, at the match (or hungover) on Sundays and there's usually football on the telly once or twice on weeknights. All this means I get between 1 and 2 hours worth of practise per week. If I manage to get more time to play than that, I usually devote it to tabbing. So this is why my tabs take so long

Have you tried sitting down. I've played guitar in all types of odd positions, from standing up to hanging upside-down from a balcony (as I've said on other occasions, I live the true metal lifestyle, which includes poor decision making skills), and some are less stressful on the back than others. Like lying down. Of course, if nothing works, I guess it's just good that you get in what you can before it hurts too much.
I try to practice at least one hour a day, and can often fit in several, but sometimes it's impossible, even with the extra hours I get from my poor eating and sleeping habits. It's not like when I first picked up the guitar and could sacrifice all my free time, and a lot of time that wasn't free, to all day practice sessions. It's funny how life gets more important, since it happens without you're noticing it except when you look back over it with guitar in mind, like I'm doing now.

About 1-3 hours typically
I always stand because when are you going to perform sitting? Around a campfire?

The thing I hate about sitting down and playing is I think I know how to play everything perfectly when Im practiceing, but then when I have to sand up and play with other people and can't nail the hard/fast stuff very well. That's why I usually alternate between sitting and standing.

When I started playing, for the first 5 months or so I played for 3 hours every day, I played the first three deftones albums back to back evry day. Then I got my band so the only time I'd play would be at jams and making up riffs and stuff but I wasn't really getting better. Now, I play for probably 2 hours average (30 mins to an hour most days and then one or two days where I stay awake till late and just play from dinner time to 6am).

For me, it's quite random..... none one day, 45 min the next, 6 hours the day after that. Due to the fact Ive been trying to tab a Cryptopsy song I've been playing at least 3 hours a day for the last little while...... but I usually work long hours, making it hard to play too much during the week.

Roughly two hours a day depending on what day. At weekends I can sometimes do five but at the moment I'm also playing bass so I have to fit both in.

For me, I usually play about 2-3 hours throughout the day, but that has only become a recent habit for me. Before, I used to only pick up the guitar every second day, but of course, that's usually because I am burnt out most of the time.

Staying studious with an instrument will teach you skills such as patience, perserverance and dedication while pot will just teach you how to be a lazy, bone-idle leach on society. Do what you want, but I know that I'd rather play guitar than score another ounce of weed and descend into a pre-neanderthal stupor.

Aww shucks. I only smoke pot on the weekend! You must be cooler and thus more evil than me!
I practice around 1-2 hours a day, and pick up a guitar every 30 mins to jam for about 2 minutes.

I wish I could play evey day but, as some of the youngsters here will find out in due course, the ever increasing journey into adulthood heralds the ever decreasing availability of practise time. Unfortunately.

Hmm, not to come off as a normal person or anything, but I'd like to give a big "THANK YOU" to all of those who blasted me for speaking my mind. A special "THANK YOU" goes out to johnmansley for attempting to read me like a 30 lettered book. But I think I can argue your point on managing time to play guitar and sustain up a job, as I have worked Monday to Friday with 6-7 hour shifts, yet still carved out a chunk of time to jam and study.
I'll try to strangle the little pride I have left, and shape my thoughts to your interests and views next time!
But if it's alright with you guys, I'd like to focus in on about the amount of time I spend on playing guitar this time around. Now with the ample time most of us have during these holidays, I've been doing close to about 4 hours a day now, and hopefully I will be able to maintain that git session on a daily basis after Christmas break.

It's been a pleasure. No really, it has. Every pothead I know is a lazy, bone idle twat who's search for drugs is subsidised by the taxes I pay towards their dole cheque. Good for you that you're the exception, but honestly, I don't give a fuck: I speak my view from my own personal experiences. If you don't like it, come over here and inform my pothead mates that they are a disgrace to the good, honest and hardworking potheads of the world. I doubt you'd even get an understandable response besides an imbecilic giggle.

No worries, I just thought I'd straighten some things out back there. I respect your opinion, yet at the same time, I too, do not care whether or not someone feels offended by my comments.
On a side note, I would enjoy smacking the zombie jesus out of your "mates" for the label that has been embedded unto myself, but I feel that their due will come one of these days.

i used to play, during my first year or so, 8 or so hours a day, but i hardly play at all anymore, i need to actually start practicing, cus whenever i play, its just me writing, or trying to learn someone elses stuff, i never actually sit there and practice going thru scales and shit.

Some people shouldn't smoke weed, period. I have been around people who will barely be able to hold a conversation after smoking weed, it's as if they become temporarily retarded. Still, just because some people use a medicine/drug improperly doesn't mean it is the downfall of anyones life.

No kidding about that! I like to play 1 hour+/day but that isn't always the case. Sometimes I find that taking a few days off actually helps me believe that me playing sounds better to me. Does anyone else get that or understand what I'm saying? It's like 2 days off actually hels my playing?

try going about a month without playing, yeah, youll have to get back to where you were, but you will also approach the instrument with a whole new perspective

I've noticed that too, Soul. There were times when I felt that my playing wasn't going anywhere and I was churning out the same riffs and licks over and over, day after day. Then one day I just decided to go on a little haitus of about 2-3 weeks and well, I guess it worked - I came back with a fresh mind and I'd 'forgotten' some of the annoying habits that were littering my style. As a rule of thumb, I'd say too much of anything - including playing guitar - will lead to detrimental overkill.

How much do you practice?
For the first few years, I practiced CONSTANTLY... I wore out a LOT of needles (rember those... records) learning from my favorite players. I've played for a little over 22 years now... and I pretty much sit down and play a couple of times a day... 30 minuts or so each time... I'm not dogmatic about it like I used to... I just love to play so it's not something I have to force or keep track of.

i play for minimum an one hour a day but some days i practice scales, some days i'm writing riffs for my band, other days just jamming favourite songs, i try and mix it up and try not to 'overkill' on certain areas.
I last had a break in July, that was for 10 days, as soon as i got home i whipped the guitar out and i was playing so freely, it does do you good to have a break, i try and break every 3rd or 4th week, i band practice on tuesday's and when i want to break i don't play guitar between practices.

I fully agree with the "take a break" consensus.
I try to play everyday (avg over 3 hours) and I get much more outta my sessions if I have a goal. I have some pretty good gear so that helps me want to hear what I'm playing even more. Every now and then I may take a day off here and there. The day after the break, it really does feel fresh and new.
So fresh and so clean...

1 - school holidays dont have to go to school
2 - usually play at night anyway so even if there was school id still practice for that long
3 - social life, me and my friends are all into music, therefore most the time we're playin guitars and shit together.
4 - I'm a chick so I dont need to go out and find a girl
HA!

sometimes that happens, its like your fingers are not cooperating, you fuck up pinch harmonics and sweeps and that gets you pissed.
I play a couple of minutes every day I guess, some days I don't play at all and some days I play for a couple of hours. I usually don't play a lot in the weekends because I'm allways gone.
I don't have a 'routine' so to speak, badass riffs just pop into my head, sometimes I grab a good guitar book, I used to play with cd's but I don't do that anymore, it bores me.
ah and ofcourse I've got band practise at least once a week, thats about 2-3 hours there. well actually 2 because we bullshit a lot and take a lot of breaks to smoke/drink. haha.
