RG550 OR JEM555?
Just found these two on ebay. The rg is used but in good condition, and costs £350. The unused Jem is £550. Which one would be best to buy, considering the price as well as the guitar?

damn you and I missed out. there was an RG 550 sold for £183 from Germany (you could pay COD!) and postage was only like 30 quid.
definetely go for the RG 550, for the price you cant beat it, and you can spend the leftover cash on a bunch of other cool stuff.

Despite the inferior trem the 555 IS a much better guitar. I own one of each plus three other Ibanez and I can guarantee the Jem will play and sound much better. The 555 gets a bad rap cause its a "jem" and the purists think Ibanez shouldn't release Korean made Jem's cause they let the brand down, in actual fact the jem is a much better guitar than any RG I've ever played and I own 4, a 550, 570, 1570 and 470 and the Jem is better than all of them. The trem can easily be replaced with an Official Floyd Rose which makes the 555 play as well as a guitar of twice its value.

and they have pickguards...fuck that shit. You loose some resonance from the pickups with that shit....and it looks stupid.

IMO, and I've read it a few times that you lose a small amount of resonance or bass from having a pickguard, compared to having the pickups mounted directly to the body.

Well if a pickup ring is used then the pickup isent directly mounted to the body either.
I have two of the same guitars, one with a pickguard and one with the pickups directly mounted... I hear subtle difference in resonance.
