Chunky or Smooth?

What do you prefer in a metal band as far as guitar tones or bass tones. Or when setting your equalizer which is more important to you, a face burning ball shaking chunk or a smooth comp type of sound capable of more leads? Despised Icon (http://www.despisedicon.com/) has one of my new favorite guitar tones, Kataklysm on Shadows & Dust is another favorite of mine.

I would like to have an aggressive bit chunky rythm tone and lead tones that scream.'
With the pedal I have now I have mildly aggressive chunk, but the leads are lost in a haze of buzz.

Yes I am aware of that , I have started saving for a good amp, my dad bought me my current amp, it was real cheap but good, a Musicman, does blues or cleans awesome but distortion for metal is like, what?
I'm just afraid he'll go like "So it didn't cut it for ya eh? Okay okay I see what you mean" so I'll have a bad conscience for changing. Although he did get me my new guitar so it shouldnt be that much of a deal...

But anyways ive started saving.

Both. Chunky for the heavy low end rhythms behind the 5th fret, and something with a lil more treble for anything played on the top 3 strings and all the way on up the neck from the 5th. Sometimes if I want something smoother on a rhythm played on the top 3, I'll set my amp for lead tone, and drop the switch on my axe to share humbuckers. Then when I'm ready to hop back into full lead tone I just flip the switch. Hey what can I say, I'm 35. I guess I'm old school LOL.

when i saw the title i thought it was going to be a shit joke... anyway, i like alot of bottom heavy chunk in my style, when i record leads for our songs i use an almost completely different set up than what i play normally, since we're a three piece i usually just have my bassist throw distortion on his bass and play my lead over that live. that solves the cutting through problem usually

You're basically the same place I'm at. I got a transtube special 212 thinkint it was going to be a new one from ebay but then I got it and it's like 98 version with 90s distortion. I want a tone like FearFrost's

I love high gain saturated stuff. I always load the gain on to it like syrup or something, always have gain at 10 for my distorted channels, unless I have a good reason not to (feedback, etc.). My EQ is usually semi-scooped mids, but when I really want to rock out then I use boosted mids. For clean, I like a really crunchy in-your-face sound or a jazz smooth. For bass, I like as smooth as possible. I use scooped mids for slap and just low end for finger style.

First off I'd be striving for a sound like Decapitated on Nihility. Love those guitars. Anyways...Chunky.

How long ago did you get this amp? Also how soon are you buying this new amp? Unless you are in a band or something i don't see any reason to even have a good amp. I mean you start off with a piece of shit and 2 years down the road you buy a quality piece of machinary. Just a thought...

depends on what i'm playing, i really love the buzzsaw grind s.s. fast tracking distortion that you can almost imagine the chunks in the sound waves...

othertimes, i want it all to flow like milk... less mids, more compression, tubes driven with so much spank that the notes leap right out from under your fingers.
garaunteed to liquify.

Depends on what I'm playing. If I'm playing death metal, its got to be chunky munky for me.

Anything else, its usually a mixture of both. If you limit yourself to one style (of music, area of playing, etc.) you will never progress. But the tone doesn't always have much to do with how the music sounds. What I mean by that is that it is how you play it, not how your amp sounds.
