Need help!
I am looking to upgrade my ss amp to a combo amp. So I have been looking around and browsing the threads.
I am considering the 5150 combo or possibly the Engl Thunder, Screamer. I have roughly around $1200 to spend. Is the 5150 worth the money? Secondly is a 50 or 60 watt loud enough to play a small gig? If I buy the Peavey I probably will throw some Eurotubes in it.
At any rate the type of music I play is mainly stuff like Lamb of god, Deicide but I would like a semi decent clean to play stuff like Nirvana or such. Probably won't use it much but a clean would be kind of nice.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If you want a bit of clean stuff, don't get the 5150. It has only one channel.
The 5150 II might be a better choice because it has two channels. The 5150 and 5150 II are relativly cheap.
I don't know where you live, but unless you live in Germany, you might have some problems finding an ENGL amp.
If you do, get one of those!

BTW I do live in Germany. However if I was to buy an Engl it would be from Rocksolid as the Euro to US dollars rate is r i d i c u l o u s!
Again is 50 watts loud enough to gig with?

Not exactly. 50 or 60 watts are just loud enough for band practice, or a realy small gig.
But hey, you can mic it right?

first... yes bls is right, they both have two channels, a rythem(that can be cleaned up a bit) and a lead... the difference is that the 5150 II has a separate eq where as the 5150 has a shared eq....
second... 50-60w is loud as hell... think of it this way, +10db is "double the volume" every time you double your wattage you're increasing your volume by 3db...
so with all other variables(there are many) 100w is 3db louder than 50w, 200w is 6 db louder than 50w, 400w is 9db louder than 50w... so for double the volume you need a bit more than 400 fucking watts(most just say ten times the wattage for double the volume, as a rule of thumb)
50w may or may not be enough depending on how loud your band is.. i personally have no problems diming 100w tube heads through two 4x12 cabs(at practice even). but i have alot of competition for noise in my band...
most decent sized venues will mic you anyways, but some wont so i think it's always handy to have the extra power on tap. not to mention it at least has to be enough for an unmic'd practice..
some people can make 5w class A combos work for their needs, but chances are they have a very different situation because that wouldnt do jack for me.
but alot of people would be suprised just how much louder a 100w head isnt over a 50w model.

If you wnat more volume, uping wattage wont do much, juts buy more speakers. The only way to get louder is to move more air and more speakers is the easiest way.

wattage will help, but most people seem to underestimate how loud a 50w tube top is.

he is right, were talking tube power, not soildstate. 50w tube is plenty load to play any type of show. I play big venue, national shows with my 5150 head which is 120w and the volume never goes past 3 and a half...and the sound guys bitch that my stage volume is to loud..... my 2 cents.

50w s.s. is hella loud too...
3.5 on a 5150 head? damn my guitarist's is on like 6-7, and he's pushing two 4x12's... for practice. but we're insanely loud.

Pimping your 27 frets is not impresive.
Nor do our jaws drop for 2 5150 heads
