I got the DVD like a years back.. $30 for 5 hr of kickass footage!!

The reason the soldiers whack the kdis with their big rubber dildo's is cause that footage was shot when russia was still under soviet rule, it was the first big metal concert in russia and thewy didnt know what to expect. The soldier got scared of this thing called "moshing"

Yeah, I saw that one. Unfortunately, the next article I read was about a woman in Columbus with the unfortunate last name of 'Gale' receiving death threats from local metalheads, despite her total lack of connection with Mr. Nathan Gale. I hate it when we live down to expectations. Metal's never felt like a culture of hate or anger in my life, and I know that metalheads all have their hearts in the right place and their brains in the wrong one, but that's never recognized. I mean, this is the music I love, and these are the people I'd like to love, and so much of what happens in the metal scene has nothing to do with what the world thinks of it, but we always find a way to publicly fuck up and feed the wrong impression. It's disheartening.

Also, claiming that metal isn't deserving of the title of 'music' is one of the most ignorant statements I've heard. Same for rap.

I knew this was coming the moment I accepted that the murder wasn't a hoax, but I guess I wasn't expecting such a shockingly ignorant attack on metal. I was expecting 'The killer listened to angry "heavy metal" music that contributed to the mindset that led to the killings' bullshit, since I've always been confronted with that in my own life and have rarely been able to convince anyone that it includes the entire emotional spectrum for me. I expected it to be singled out as a violent form of entertainment. I did not expect to see it singled out as semi-human monkey music. The guy claims to be an elitist, which is fine, but the viewpoint he espouses isn't elitist, it's ignorant. There's nothing easier or lazier than making snap judgments about a group of people you refuse to learn about; if you put in an ounce of effort you find that some people confirm your assumptions and others don't. Yes, it's true that some metal is just angst and poor musicianship, but it's also true that metal is a form of music that can allow for the highest levels of complexity, intelligence (in music and lyrics), and musicianship. It's true that some metalheads are ignorant, violent assholes; it's also true that some are as intelligent as you're likely to meet. Calling every metalhead a mongoloid or barbarian demonstrates only one person's intelligence.

The other problem is his idea of dictating taste. Music is radically intelligible; it speaks to you viscerally and immediately by nature. So, immediately, you know if it speaks to you at all or just fails to work. That's what's beautiful about it. If you only have the one option (let's limit all classical music to the pre-Romantic period, since that seems to be the limit as far as William Grim's able to stretch his musical tastes; I think it's safe to say I know more about the noble medium of music than Messr. Grim, and I don't even consider myself a connoisseur) and it doesn't work for you, you're fucked. People don't like music due to a lack of intelligence; they like it when it works for them. Maybe it won't work so well if they expand and find something else, but it affects on a level other than the intelligence. It arrests and absorbs. If this weren't true, somebody like powersofterror - or, shit, Jim or myself - would have long ago stopped liking metal when we got educated enough to see that it sucks. Shit like that hasn't happened, and isn't likely to happen, because the reason we like it never had anything to do with our level of musical education. My high school music teacher knows a fuckload more about music than this asshole - for example, he can name more than the three best known composers, and he got his education at one of the more rigid and difficult music universities in the country - but that never stopped him from yelling out (projecting from the diaphragm with a voice that used to perform in opera houses around the country) 'Bring Da Noise' when he felt like it. Why? Because an education that allows you to appreciate 'the greatest artistic achievements of mankind' does not preclude appreciating other things as well. As far as I'm concerned, your education is a failure if you can only appreciate 'the greatest artistic achievements of mankind;' you haven't developed and refined your taste through intelligence, you've erased it from your soul.

Also, I think this guy should've taken himself to some elitist grammarian. The sentence 'I do not understand exactly why I prefer Haydn to my good friend who prefers Beethoven.' reads like it was written by somebody trying to convey his intelligence but lacking the education to do it. I understand what he means, but it's not the type of sentence you want out there when you're trying to show off how cultured and civilized you are. It's the type of sentence you write when you want to impress your high school English teacher and your writing isn't up to it. The entire article reeks of his own ignorance about virtually everything. He fails as an elitist, since he doesn't come close to living up to his own standards as far as intellect is concerned. He fails as an iconoclast, since blaming metal for violence and thinking it primitive and non-musical isn't exactly the most controversial and esoteric stance. PST --Since you took the time to write all that I took the time to read it. You have a lot of validity there. When you were talking about the guy not having a clue about the enormous emotional spectrum that you feel from it due to his lack of knowledge about it, I heard that load and clear. I'd also say there's a lot of different subject matter also.
I studied with some Jehovah's Witnesses just to see what they were al about. I had no intention of converting or anything like that and was very upfront with why I was doing what I was doing. I figured instead of just ignoring knocks on my door I'd have knowledge I could share with them as to why I wasn't interested in what they believed. I do tell them that there's similarities in both our beliefs that are to the benefit of mankind and our own beyond, but I don't agree with some of their other beliefs. They have always seemed satisfied with that.
This yea-who should get a little more involved with the nitty-gritty of the aspects of metal before he condemns it. I guess I learned that myself because Wally liked it so much. Same about Tupac from his brother.

I wouldn't say Lennon grew up shit poor. Liverpool during the 50s and 60s was going through a downturn in fortunes: the German Blitzkrieg of 1940 and 1941 had destroyed large sections of the port and Liverpool was paying for it. At the turn of the 20th century Liverpool was the largest and busiest port in the world but by the time the 50s arrived it had already started to dwindle.

The population had fallen from a high of 800'000 in 1900 to just over half that figure by 1960 and this reduction in population lead to a lot of problems for the city. A large reduction in the Council Tax revenue recieved by the council could not sustain what was essentially a city that was too big for it's population. As a result Council Tax rose sharply and many found it tough going.

All of Liverpool felt the effects but areas such as Childwall and Woolton (Lennon lived in Woolton) fared far better than Toxteth, Kirkdale and Bootle for example. So I wouldn't say that his outlook on life was influenced by abject poverty per se, but there was some - most probably exaggerated - element of struggle there that had an effect on him. But to say that he was piss poor is a little wide of the mark.
