The attacker leapt onstage as the group, Damageplan, performed, and began "targeting members in the band," Sgt. Brent Mull said.
Two others were injured in the incident, although the nature of their injuries was not clear.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunman initially shot and killed the band's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell. Darrell, 38, and his brother, Vinnie Paul, 40, are former members of Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country and western songwriter and producer.
Police were notified of the shooting at the Alrosa Villa nightclub on the city's north end around 10:18 p.m. ET, Mull said. A uniformed police officer who was in the area slipped into the venue from a back entrance, confronted the gunman during the rampage and killed him.
"If not for the officer who showed up, there would have been more dead," Mull said.
Police have roped off a huge area of the nightclub's parking lot, as 60 detectives question hundreds of witnesses. Police have brought in buses to keep the witnesses warm as they wait to be questioned.
Calvin Bota said he saw the shooting from the mosh pit right in front of the stage, shortly after the band began playing.
"Somebody came -- I don't know where they came from, out of the audience or whatnot -- but they come onto (the) stage and ... he shot the guitarist at first, fired a couple of other shots and then he hid behind the stage a little bit," Bota told WSYX.
"Everybody started scattering, you know, there's mayhem everywhere. And then a police officer came into the building, you know, came in professional with his gun raised and then he proceeded to shoot the guy."
Gerald Caudill told WSYX the gunman shot the guitarist at least four times.
"I was up close to the stage and I just saw some guy run up on the side of the stage and I heard some shots and I saw (drummer) Vinnie Paul and somebody jumped on top of Vinnie, and the guy just stayed around the stage and started shooting other people," Caudill said.
"I saw wounded people all over the place, out in the parking lot, inside," he said. "It just didn't sound like gunshots or anything, it didn't occur to me that something like that was happening."

I just went down to the drug store and bought a Guiatr OWrld withthe poster in it and also a Revolver because there's an article listed in the bulletin section by Vinnie offering some manly advice. It's pretty amusing actually.But the poster is just damn eerie since the top of it says "Prepare to count your dead " then Pantera right under that. Then it goes on to say special guest Type O at Rhodes Arena, Akron, Ohio, Feb. 19. No year or anything like that so it may be a reprint. I went to the Ticketmaster website to look for any tickets just to see if it was for real and nothing was listed so it was probably a reprint.

I don't post here that much, but I had to come and post after I heard what happened. Dimebag was a great guitar player, and one of the best showman out there. Always put on an incredible show, and will be extremely missed... I really don't know what else to say. This is a good example of people taking being a "fan" far too extreme. I really wish the fucker that shot him wasn't dead, he deserves far worse. I'm sure all of us who grew up on metal looked at Pantera as almost family... They helped me get through the hard times, the troubles I've run into, and it helped give me an understanding and a sound to the emotions that I sometimes couldn't identify.. Anyways...
RIP Darrell..
My condolences go out to his family, and everyone else that was hurt during this bullshit situation brought on by utter stupidity.

I just found out about this today. A buddy of mine called me up and told me. I was fucking shocked, man. From what I know, Dimebag was one of the nicest and most tolerant guys around. Him and Vinnie hung out with every fucking band out there, man. I think this was un fucking called for. Too bad they shot the motherfucker who did it. He deserves a much more brutal and painful punnishment. 
I never got to see Pantera live, and I was always hoping that one day, maybe they'd get back together or something, but now those hopes have been shot to shit. It's a damn shame, man. Dime was one fine musician.
I'm out of words, man. Just don't know what to say. I'm still in fuckin shock.

Tis a terrible day in Metal history. I for one today wore all black, played no music (because i am not worthy of playing and in his honor it would only be right) and will only listen to Damage Plan and Pantera the whole day. It only feels right for me. A musical genious, A master of the insturment I am proud to call the guitar. It deeply sadens me that anyone in their right or wrong mind would ever do this. I was shocked the whole day... When listening to his music i feel like he is right next to me just like hes going to break out into a crazy solo. I will be like this for a long time... Pantera was the first metal band i ever liked and i always held good ole' Dime in the highest respects. Now i sit here looking back and just the other day i was sitting in my room with pantera blasting and i thought Pantera will get together then ill be their for their renunion tour but now, even if they try to bring everyone back it will not be right. I knew a few who almost cried but i knew that the metal mentality would not let me but only to honor him any way i could... I am making a wall of pics of him in my room to pay respects. I am happy though... that he will be imortal in his pioneering of metal and just his music in general. I am a fairly new metalhead but i know this is a day of tragety and sadness to all metalheads. WHY DID YOU LEAVE US DIME!!?!??!??! |

I just heard about it when I walked in the door.
I almost heard it today at lunch. A local radio station was saying something about dimebag darrel and i wanted to catch it but i missed it. So I walk in and my gf tells me "I've got something sad to tell you". I figured it out right then. She had cried a couple of times today. And i think i am going to. Don't know why, I didn't know the guy, but I feel attatched to him in a way.
