Singing: Proper technique...
I've seen some people (ivanlagru and powers come to mind) discuss clean singing and the technique "behind" it. I'm very interested in knowing more. If anyone has got any type of good information to give on the subject of clean singing (aimed preferably (for me) at a n00b, but any level is warmly welcomed), I'd really like to hear it.

play and then sing each fret on the guitar (within a human range, obviously)
take a theory course (helps to learn solfeggio)
know when to switch from your chest tone (low) to your head tone (high)
singing is like guitar , everyone sucks when they start. nobody is born with a four octave range and 20 second sustain

What's solfeggio?
And I've heard those terms thrown around before, but what is chest and head voice, and how do shift from one to another?
I'm not really interested in musical theory or pitch finding, but more in the actual technique of singing.

20 second sustain, I got that ...well not a full 20 secs I doubt anyone really has that...it's more like 10-15 secs...
I'm assuming "chest" would be refering to normal voice, and "head" refering to falsetto. You just gotta keep at it, or ask a choir boy to teach you.

falsetto is cheating. head tone is using your voice box differently. you just have to feel it
solfeggio is do re me

Transient basically had the good advice I would have given, I've sang clean all my life and just recently got into a death metal band and taught myself how to growl and scream with higher vocals, they both use similar properties, the one thing you ALWAYS want to make sure you dont is sing and use your stomach muscles to produce volume, always pushing from your throat will kill your chords and shred them over time.
when I grown I get a gutteral sound when I use my muscles but it only adds to the depth, but the same goes for clean singing. and as transient said, using what some people call your " chest voice "
Chest voice will sound a little more airy but you can fine tune these problems by changing your intonation while holding a note. But practice at it, singing along with other clean vocals on your favorite cd's is a great way to develop a style and get the feel for clean singing.
Eventually once you explore your range, you can start singing along to Akerfeldt and people like Maynard keenan. juts takes practice, jsut like guitar or anything else.

I can sustain a note for 30 seconds, so a lot of people must have 20 second sustain.

Kenny G did that 45 minute sustained note on a sax, dunno if it counts. Gotta love them "I Love The" specials on VH1.

Well, that's using circular breathing, and you can't do that with vocals, so I'd say it doesn't count.

it depends, some people have a strong enough falsetto to the point where people don't even know it's falsetto, but usually it sounds weak and empty.
but if you can pull it off more power to ya
