lately im getting tired of seeing Kerry Kings face everywhere. I mean he writes some cool riffs....but come on...has he ever written one really good lead with some feeling to it?

This thread is nothing but a zing at Kerry King. I make fun of various other bands I dont like, so I cant blame you for making fun of him, but this thread is a waste of space. Make fun of people in existing threads, or, keep to yourself.
Understand NOW?

I'm personally a fan, he isn't real technical or anything I just like his choppy sporadic solos.

you did ask for a Overrated guitarist, Okay. I think KG just don't belong in that category because his excelent riffage, some of his solos are improvised, some not, but anyway, just look his past man!
its hard to point one, i'll go for Rick Rozz (ex-Death guitarist), he just couldn't play Spiritual Healing songs and Chuck kicked his ass off!
by the way;

alright 27 frets....just because you learned a few slayer songs doesn't give you the right to make this post. Besides, no one cares that you have 27 frets.

Between '84 and '89 he had some pretty good leads but since the Black album he's gone backwards. In summary, Hammet is way over-rated post-1989.
Don't get me wrong, I think the guy is a good guitarist, but for me, Trey Azagthoth is a little over-rated. Although technically adept, none of his solos are memorable and I strugge to remember one that wasn't drenched in wah and whammy effects. I've definitely gone off his lead work since I've heard players like Jon Levasseur and Daniel Mongrain.

I'm not sure how many times I've answered this question before, but here goes.
3. Dimebag Darrell
2. James Hetfield
1. Kirk Hammett

Yea I'd have to agree that Kirk is pretty overrated, but even after the Black album and the 2 masturbation albums. He's still a damn good guitarist, but there are equals out there or people better.
I hope this doesn't inspire a "Who is the most underrated guitarist" thread.

Dimebag? He is universally praised, but waaaaay, waaaaaaaay better than Hammet. I wouldn't say overrated.

This is cool with me.
The spam was very annoying, but I appreciate the attempt to contribute to the forum with this thread.
And Kerry King is without a doubt one of the most over rated guitarists out there.

Sure it does! That's why we became mods!
I'll agree with John on this, i think Trey is quite a bit overrated. I love the solo in "Where the Slime Live", and a couple tracks on Gateways, but the rest are just......normal. They don't live up to the legend that is "Trey".
I also think Kerry's overrated. Jeff is much better, and cooler.

As I am reading this, Frantic Disembowelment is playing. So you can only imagine what I think about what you have just said.
Kerry is a good guitar player, don't get me wrong. The media and all these guitar wanna be fucks blow him up like he is Malmsteen mixed with Rhoads and Hendrix and whoever else....it just gets old.
I especially don't appreciate BC Rich using him as a marketing tool for SHITTY guitars.

I say Hammet is over rated because he IS. Even his old solos are just the same fucking patterns with wah, wah is all over the old stuff.
Malmsteen is overrated. Wow you jerk off over the same 2 modes and do 3 string arpeggios. Yes, he was one to strat teh neo-classical movement but his runs are very repetitive and Rising Force is really the only album where he displayed decent song writing abaility. Add to this is terribly huge ego and gold chains, you have a douche bag pirate.

lol....sad but true. I don't listen to malmsteen..(why did he mention him again) I just know he is good at blazing fast runs.....thats about it though. The most influential guitarists to me right now are:
Pat O' Brian, and the guitarist from Meshuggah (Fredrik Thorendal and Marten Hagstrom) Luckily they aren't overated because most people that think Kerry King and Kirk Hammet are the best metal guitarist to live are to scared to listen to death metal (or whatever for that matter that we all love here).
I dare someone to talk shit of Pat O' Brian.

Gotta agree with Chris here guys. These guys are probably the most over rated of all. I'm tired of hearing shit about how Dime is so fucking cool. Not all, but most of the people that say he is awesome are either not musicians, or they are horrible musicians and wouldn't know a good musician if one came up and bit them on the ass. Once again, before any of you lash out at me, remember that I did say that not everyone is like this. I'm sure that some of you just like his playing, and that's all good. More power to you.
Trey overrated? I think not, but then again everyone is entitled to their opinion.

^^^Zakk Wylde^^^^ People at my school also worship hammett like he's god. KK hits random notes for solos. Jimi hendrix is overrated because thats the only guitar player anyone has ever heard of so they love him. Yngwie plays boring random fast shit mostly, although i do like a few songs.

I Don't really think Trey is overrated. Are there better? of course. But whatever.
I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and say Hammett. That Post-'89 solo shit is a joke and has "let's please the record company executive" all over it.
And of course, Muhammed Suicmez, Luc Lemay and Daniel Mongrain are sooooooooooo overrated.

'>' is equivalent to saying 'greater than'. Dead was also comparing Yngwie Malmsteen to a Douche Bag Pirate so, basically, we get Jason Becker is better than Yngwie Malmsteen. Incidentally, I concur with this: Malmsteen is over-rated.

I've always thought Mustaine's lead playing is over-rated. He writes great riffs though so that sort of compensates in a Trey Azagthoth sort of way.

Mustaine is probably my favorite, no way is he overrated, maybe underrated if anything. His leads are better than Alexi's I think.

FUCK. i did a whole list but it didnt go through cos my cunt internet. this is really giving me the shits.
kirk hammett. don't need to explain that.
anders björler. good riff player but his solos are easy as.
øystein aarseth (euronymous). black metal pioneer, but he was not a good guitarist at all.
roger beaujard. don't need to explain that one either.
alexi laiho. good, but deserves less credit than he gets.
dino cazares. helped put the metal in fear factory, and was a vital part of brujeria, but pretty goddamn simplistic.
some underrated guitarists:
joe haley - psycroptic
emppu vuorinen - nightwish
devin townsend

I would say that Malmsteen is the most overated guitarist. Most of his material sounds alike. Dont get me wrong, i think Yngwie's music is awsome, but hes played out the whole neo-classical thing.

This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. Considering that most people here (myself included) consider Kerry King to be vastly overrated, I doubt anybody worships him enough to mimic his opinions. This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. I restricted my list to three people, if there had been five, Kerry would've been on it. This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. Seriously, this is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen.
Just to clarify for the benefit any dolts who honestly don't understand, that sentence was repeated for EMPHASIS.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned James Hetfield.
But I definately agree, the most over-rated metal guitarist has to be good ol' Captain Kirk.

If James has played for over 20 years one of Kirk's solo's should be cake.
Bob Vigna from Immolation is overated
Tonny Iommi is somewhat overated
Bill Steer is underated
Demonaz was underated

I don't like John Petrucci from Dream Theater. He just shreds, and fucking shreds, and etc. It is seriously fucking annoying. At least with Liquid Tension Experiment you should expect it.
MP is good, but he is over-rated. I still like Steve Vai.
I think I'm going to comment on a few people who were posted.
James Hetfeild, around here at least, gets no sort of recognition. KH is a cunt, and couldn't hold a light to some of the greats.
Malmsteem is another person like Petrucci. JUST FUCKING END IT, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
Iommi is incredibly overrated. He did alot to pioneer how we play guitar these days, but other than that, his playing is nothing phenomenal.
And as for Kerry King, he does have skill. [sarcasm] It takes serious skill to lean on your whammy bar for an entire solo.[/sarcasm] Kerry King is, and will always be over-rated.

10,000? Hardly! He only uses 5 pedals - which isn't much. Espically for the huge assortments of sounds he reproduces (bagpipes, harmonicas, turn tables, etc).
1. Dunlop Crybaby (70$)
2. Digitech Whammy (200$)
3. Boss DD-2 (190$)
4. DOD EQ (50$)
5. Ibanez Flanger (60$)
Thats about 570$. Alot of his sound though comes from his guitar (which he personally tweaked) or outside influences (wrenches, steel picks, feedback, etc.)
Tom Morello may not be a shred master, but he knows his music. He certainly is one of the most innovated guitar players of our day.

I'm not a RATM fan and probably never will be, but I'd be hard pressed to refute anything Darko said. Morello really is one of the most creative guitarists of our time, and definitely a true innovator. I'm not a fan of what he does, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't somewhat impressive.

I mean no disrespect, well maybe I do. I'm probably gonna get flamed for this one.
Euronymous - From all the shit I hear from the 9rim tr00 n3cr0 kvlt, that he was Mayhem's best guitarist, I honestly thought he was kind of boring as a guitarist.
Slash - He's awesome on the guitar, but good lord, a hear the same amount of hyping up as I hear about Euronymous. "He's the best ever! BLAH BLAH!"
Munky and Head - Puts a heavy element in Korn, to cover up that bass slapping shit Fieldy does, I hate that freaking crap. Really simple guitar playing though. I'll give credit to whichever one of them that played the guitar solo from Another Brick in the Wall, in Korn's cover.
Daron Malakian - I've only heard 2 guitar solos (i think) from him.
Kirk Hammet & James Hetfield - self-explanatory

Don't you people ever get bored of being close-minded and idiotic? Once Dylan gave his explanation, I figured nobody but a dumbass would argue with it. Thanks for proving me right, CC.
There's more to life than being able to shred. Listen to what you say when you criticize Yngwie and apply it to everything in your life. Or become an insufferable bore on the lead guitar.
Also, whoever said Hetfield's greatest accomplishment was a lead: way to miss the point. He's an important rhythm player. Much more important than probably any thrash lead player. In general, lead gets more attention, because flash is always more attractive than substance, but rhythm playing is everything. The fact that some bands can be perfectly functional without lead playing should prove this.

So is Trey, John. Obviously all, or most, of these guitarists are going to be good and distinctive; otherwise they wouldn't have been singled out and praised so frequently we have to comment on how overrated they are, and we'd see a lot more of names like Munky, Wes Borland, Mark Tremonti, and whoever else was popular and overpraised back when we last paid attention to pop culture. At some point, personal preference is going to come in and play the decisive role unless you come up with a mathematically-weighted formula by which all guitarists can be measured. But, again, that would be weighted by the personal preferences of the person who came up with it.

I fail to see what is so damn unique about Vigna. I am certainly an Immolation fan, and he is good, but he's just not a mindblowing guitarist for me. I'm not going to go so far as to say he's overrated, that would be utter bollocks.
And I am saying this not having heard the Failures For Gods album, so if I'm missing some really crazy shit, please let me know. I figure I am.

I think the appealing quality of Vigna, or at least for me, is that he's got a very distinct sound.

I disagree about Hetfield not being overrated. He is generally heralded as the greatest metal rhythm guitarist ever, and he wasn't even the best thrash rhythm guy back when he was actually good. Every guitar magazine verbally fellates him. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't take those guitar magazines seriously, but the general public perception, as evidenced in those shitty magazines, is that he is or was the best. He wasn't even close to the best. Therefore, he is (or was) overrated.

I didn't say he wasn't overrated, just that judging him by his lead playing ability is stupid. I've thought he was overrated since the day I first heard Anthrax. Though I think at least a part of that is due to the fact that his influence on metal players to come after him is huge enough that he's basically been canonized. Influence should count for something, even if it is the reason he's so overpraised.
I also love Trey. I love guitarists whose fingers I can hear.

I've noticed Jon Donais getting a lot of praise for his guitar work, while I do think he's has outstanding skill, his style is very ripped off

We're all swimming in his wake. Compare him to other players from the same era: They were all playing the amplified acoustic guitar. He was playing the electric guitar. Is he the best player of all time? Certainly not, and in that sense he is overrated. But it's hard to think of someone else who left the same mark on electric guitar playing. And, like I just said, the sheer impact of the playing should count for something, even if it does cause people to include manufactured ideas of skill.
Jon Donais isn't incredible, but I haven't heard him praised much. I really, really dislike Shadows Fall, but I wouldn't have included him in this. Then again, I haven't read a guitar or metal magazine for about four years.
This thread more or less exists so everyone can agree on Hammett. It's not his fault that he's somehow become a standard of what 'good' is (for some reason I keep seeing 'He's no Kirk, but he's pretty good,' or 'His style is all right, but compare him to a player like Kirk Hamster and you'll see why it's all hype' in the inevitable guitarist vs other guitarist debates, even those he isn't included in), but he only goes so far towards living up to his legend. And, of course, I can only be annoyed at someone whose attitude towards playing over a career is 'Well, I started out playing the pentatonic box because it's where I was comfortable, but I eventually expanded into modal playing' - which is a good thing, since it's never a bad idea to give yourself different options within your own style - 'but now I'm back to the pentatonic box.' What the fuck? That's Metallica's unfortunate career: they started out with something that was simple and familiar, expanded to what is, in retrospect, a breathtaking degree (the rest of metal does not catch up to the arrangement of late 80's Metallica for years, though it probably could have), then, right at the (as it turned out) height of their compositional complexity, decide that a well-arranged song is 'too anal' and return to familiar rock patterns. Even though Kirk had no creative input, he followed the exact same pattern. That's not to say that Metallica doesn't have some awesome lead playing; it's just that, the way you hear about it, you expect Hammett's playing to be an all night acrobatic fuck session, and it turns out it's a good hand job: nice, but you could do it yourself without all the bullshit.
Plus, he has no vibrato. That is really annoying. Even Tony Iommi has vibrato, and he has no fingertips. Where is Kirk's vibrato?

It's just his middle finger if I'm not mistaken...he use to use a timble but then he got some other things to put on. I read an interview with him talking about him relearning how to play after he messed up his finger.

philkilla666 is also right. In a recent guitar world magazine there was some mention of Tony Iommi having a reason for down tuning because of Ozzy. Downtuning was to make the sound deeper and to compensation for Ozzy's singing. He had problems staying in tune in lower tunings because his Gibson's neck shifted so it would come out of tune easily.

Someone's really digging deep in the thread archives here...
Marty Friedman or Steve Vai, tough call. What fucking boring overblown posers those guys are...Impressive solos? Sure. Good song writing? Not.

Kirk Hammett for sure. When you look in the credits in the booklets its all Hetfield, rarely ever does Kirk make a contribution and when he does its masked with so much wah that it sounds like shit.
