I don't trust my ability or right to judge and mete out punishment, even for the things I'm most adamantly against, but I think I could give somebody the death he deserves if he'd already accepted it. I suppose that could be applied to situations other than illness or physical suffering, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree that it should.

Chris makes a good point on Bush: though it would probably be very personally satisfying, even for the not particularly violent, it wouldn't make things better. It would probably make things worse, even if the killer was never known. It's not as thoguh, if he were killed, they'd refuse to use that as a way to go even further (some might say justifiably) in the direction that's already been started.

Aside from that, Chris's second paragraph reminds me of The Politics of Ecstasy, and that's cool.
