when i noticed yesterday that my right speaker in my peavey 5150 212 combo was rattling when i played. annoying and i thought id check it out. tody MTM and i took apart the entire amp and saw nothing loose or broken. everything was in fine shape. i did buy this amp second hand from ebay but there was no problems before and theres no reason to think its severely broken or that i got ripped off. so when i went to band practice today the amp was ok, i played for a while, then in the middle of a song it just stopped working. we took it apart again and put a new fuse in to replace one that had just blown (8 amp fuse). we powered MTM's cabinet with the headpart of the combo (the thing is really a head cab put together.) that worked fine. but when i plugged in and played through the amp how it should be no sound came out. whats wrong?i think it must be a speaker problem. how much do speakers cost? they are sheffield 1200 12'' speakers. could it be the tubes? why would it work through MTM's cab? what should i do? how much will everything cost?

I'm not the 5150 man around the hood, maybe BLS can tell you more about them.

speakers differ in price, I'de say most decent speakers are around 70-100 bucks (V30's ad such) sheffields are prolly cheaper.

if it works fine with other cabs, it must be a speaker problem. rattling speakers have nothing to do with tubes.

maybe one of your speakers is blown (or both) because the fuse went out, fuses don't go out easily but if you take away a speaker on a tube amp, it does blow (aka, a defective speaker or broken speaker cable will make your tube amp pop its fuse)
Thats why you are allways warned to have speakers connected to a tube amp before turning it on...

the fuse didn't blow when you played the other cab, right?

theres a bunch of things that can go wrong with speakers, the coils (the winding in the speaker might get fucked after transport (rare..) the conus might have a rupture or even the edge of the speaker conus (the 'elastic' part) could be anything.

is say its a sefe bet its not the tubes or else it would not have workd with MTM cab.
you said you took it apart, did you noticed any lose wires? that happend to a hum on my guitar once, the soldering just got week and came off. or perhaps when you took it apart you accidentaly knocked it lose?

im not sure but speakers are probably like 50-60$ maybe more.

are you sure the speakers in the combo are connected properly? red to red, black to black n' such? connected securly at both ends?

do you have another head type unit or combo you can test out your combo's speakers with?

try taking two speakers out of the the other cab you're using, and then put them in place of your combo's speakers, if it works like that then something is probably wrong with your combo's speakers.

you could ask peavey about it, if they can sell you replace ment speakers n' such, otherwise you might just buy some nice celestions or eminence's.

yeah, i shoudl have thought to test mtm's head with my speakers. good call. i dont have any other speakers and im not going to disembowel mtm's gear just to fix my own.

what kind of speakers do you recommend for death metal? gainy, loud! are there different ratings or something?
