Pantera.... or more like Damageplan lives just an hour or so south of me.
This local metal/punk band called Scarline: awesome guitarist and bass player, shitty singer and drummer.
This local grindcore band, called Machine Gun Romantics: I go to school with the drummer. Haha, we're in orchestra together  .

Both bands kick ass. Deamon is highly technical and amazing, and Tribunal is a 3 piece which is like Martyr and Death combined.
A little further east from me and you get the best bands out of Canada: Cryptopsy, Martyr, Gorguts, Quo Vadis, Necronomicon, and hundreds more.

Metallica was founded right down the street from my house (Downey,CA) and
Slayer was also started about 5 or 10 minutes away from my house if you want to get technical about it. Otherwise, badass local bands are:

once my band gets together, we will be the only metal band in my town worth mentioning, we play opeth type stuff, currently w/o clean vox, cus i sing and play guitar, and my clean vox suck.
if you drive north about an hour, you have nevermore and queensryche, drive south a ways, to oregon, we have agalloch, but thats about it for good local bands as far as ive heard, there are a few nobody bands in eastern wash. that i havent heard anything by them yet, cant remember names off hand, but they are there

My old drummer was really fast, too. But he quit my band (Dead In Your Arms) to play for By The Sins Fell Angels.
But its ok. I got their lead guitarist now. He's Freaking good.
