What gets you in the mood?

for looooooooooove

I mean what gets you in the mood for writing lyrics? Do you do it in school/at work? Do you get in the mood in a different way when writing about a different theme?

I like to have a somber candle lit room and sit with my acoustic and write some shit thats not too heavy (Alice in Chains style).

I was watching the Exorcist and came up with some pretty cool horror lyrics. I like to use a lot of metaphores when writing about horror/gore to make it not sound cheesy.

One time when I was bored listening to Obituary, I wrote music to their music. but I don't really prefer writing like that...seems too unoriginal but its really not.

when im bored sometimes stuff will pop in my head and ill go from there.
or if im reading something or different imagry, like one time i was looking at all these frozen landscapes from scandinavia so i did this black metal type peice.
i think history the most. right now im working on a peice about jack the ripper (yea its been done) but im gonna have a song about each of the women he killed. and i was working on two peices about vlad "tepes" the impaler and countess bathory that was going to intertwine somehow because one of bathory's ancestors helped out vlad on some raids and stuff so there lives kinda weave together and i was gonna have the songs to that to...not to get offtopic though

sometimes ill write lyrics to tunes that already exist, i did one to war ensemble and stuff but i never wright music to it cause it would come out way to much like the original song it was spoofed from

when my gf talks dirty to me

hahahaha. seriously, when im depressed i always which is when i wrote my first "serious" song that's in poetry and lyrical. i just write when im angry or depressed, which is when my "traditional" stuff comes out about pain and suffering.

when im happy and i write, i write about space cos its a cool topic just hearing a new piece of information or studying science....god i sound like such a nerd hehee.

music-wise, when i hear a good riff i TRY to write, but every fucking riff i write ends up sounding like "blinded by fear" by at the gates.

Hmmmm I'd have to say that other great artists inspire me alot when I just happen to listen to the legendary tracks of maiden or black sabath. Maiden is realy what gets me going though, but that's only on musical/artistic note.

I'd have to say that my lead guitarist just playing stuff over and over, or messing around gets me to come up with nice rhymes and eventualy getting a concept for a song we're writting, be it whatever mood, it's a sort of a symbiotic musical relationship realy.

A lot of times I have to be in the right mood to realy write good lyrics, which usualy only occures realy late at night, I have a slight buzz (or just flat out drunk), and I'm in an artistic mood, which is always late at night, heh.

Meh, that's what gets me going, other things contribute, but I don't count them as major roles in writing my lyrics, more like accessory feelings/emotions/ideas that help the process.

the ideas sound cool.

i usually sit in my room either in complete silence or with some music corresponding with my mood, for inspiration. if i have a lot of stuff on my mind, i could meditate, or at the least smoke a bowl(that works best for comming up with stuff).

Some porn, beer, PS2, and a naked dancing wife....

Oh, wait, better not go into too much detail

Seriously now, I've writen the best lyrical stuff while in a highly emotional or concentrated state of mind, which doesn't happen for me or most people very often. When it happens to most people don't think to just start writing like crazy. I don't always have the chance to write when I'm emotional (hateful, dispeared, sad, enlightened, loved, depressed, energized, all feelings), but I try to remember what I feel and I can never recall the intensity unless I write it down at that very time. Sometimes it can be hard to write things down while feeling certain ways, especially with things going on around you at the same time. It's nothing but a mess of thoughts at the time and I write until the feeling passes. Later I will go though and reread what I wrote and if I find that I get even a faction of the feeling or message back from reading it I will go though and edit it into something with structure. Generally it is good shit. I've writen this way drunk but later while sober find that it can be rewriten into a wonderful song/poem.

Dreams always inspire me to write. I once wrote seven song that were all linked together about a dream I had where the world ends. It was one dream, but I thought it too long so I broke it down in to seven chapters. Other than that, when I go to write lyrics, they always sound very cheesy to me.

This has absolutly nothing to do with "Vocal" Zone, so I'm moving it to "Poetry Lyrical" Zone.

Anything really. I once wrote a whole song out of 3 spoken lines from Shrek 2. Generally, before I finished high school, I wrote lyrics in class, but then I would write much better stuff when I was depressed. I just hear something and it clicks, and I write.

With the exception of viagra and a dancing naked wife most everything named has caused some bit of inspiration for me. I wrote in jr. high and high school when I was younger and scribbled a lineor 2 down when I thought of it the past couple years at the classes I took for work. I wrote when I used to get high. I've written after a drink or two. (I don't drink much.) But pictures, people, thinking of my history or future, crazy stuff in odd places inspires me. Every emotion has inspired me and I've felt some of those very intensely at times to the point I know there was a natural chemical change in my system. I loved to write then because when I go back later and read I'd think--I wrote that? Another way I like to write especially if I'm bored is to write from someone else's perspective. Sometimes I sing that way, too. It' s like getting into character and it's cool.

When I'm in a good/neutral mood I write Turbonegro type songs because that is my life

When I'm depressed I write good power/viking metal songs (?)

But mostly, I do all my writing in Algebra II class.

I noticed that writting out of boredom comes out very sub-par for me. Generally, when I come up with something I come up with it over a couple of days, sometimes weeks and it spontanelously comes out. Most of my stuff is written down on paper towels because of that.

If I'm angry I usually come up with various gore/horror/rage lyrics, I havent had any bigger experience of writing yet so some of them can turn out to be a bit corny.

I know it's already been said but I write good lyrics when my emotions are near exploding point. Anger, hate, betrayel, pain......etc are all good for dark and hateful lyrics. But for more poetic and nice stuff well that's a different thing entirely. Normally when I'm feeling peaceful.

I also write some of my best when I'm in love and very passionate about something or someone. When I feel their pain. When I share their immense joy or success. When I'm angry over injustice. If my chemical balance is changed to the point where my soul feels supercharged that's when find the most creativity. I use words I don't usually and sometimes it wears me out for days after as far as writing goes. It's a natural rush like I never felt and highly addictive. I seriously hope you all feel it at some point in your lives. Just be very careful of what you do when you do.
