Hey guys,

I was looking at all the reviews of the XXX. Has anyone actually tried out this combo to play metal? Peaveys are kind of rare in Darmstadt, GE. I know everyone swears by the 5150 combo. Is it possible to retube the XXX to make it more like the 5150?

Also has anyone tried the Eurotubes?

WHY woud you want a triple X to sound more like a 5150? But no, I dont believe you can.

Duly noted! Thanks guys. The only reason I was considering it was because it has a clean channel and the power switching option from 25w, 50w, to 100w.

the 5150 has a clean channel...but if your gonna use both channels an equal amount, then (not sure if they have it) get a 5150 II combo cause it has seperate eq'a for the clean and crunch channel

Exactly, the Rhythm channel is voice more marhsally and the lead more soldanoish.

Try a tubescreamer with your XXX, Exodus does that and they have a killer sound.

NO. The 5150 has no clean.. hence why people say it has a crappy clean because they are using the Rhythm channel with 0 gain. The truth is it has NO clean.. its still possible to get a usuable clean though.

Transient has a footswitch for clean on his 5150 and the clean is real bad for people who know clean. But for intros like Torn Into Enthrallment and When The Sun Burns Red and stuff like that I love that muddy sound.

Far as I can tell, a lot of amps have no "clean" channel, and you just use channel "a" or whatever with little gain. I don't know why people make such a big deal about the 5150 having that configuration.

Most amps with 2 channels with have one clean channel and one dirty.

NEVER got a good tone out of it, tried it 4 times so far (2 times combo, and 2 times head) and it never gave me anything good, odd thing is the JSX is real close, but I did get a good sound with it.

Damn.. that thing has 3 channels, can use 6l6's OR el34's and has a fully adjustable bias. It can make many sounds.

well the first time i tried it, they had a "not going past 2 on volume rule"

the second was in combo form, and it was at the, music place by my house and "if they can hear it its too loud" when the damn thing needs to be loud and its next to the guys who run the place.

the thrid was with a friend when i drove him to uni and on the way there we stopped into musicstop to mess around, and (it was a combo), and there was some ass in the bass room with it on high, and a guy in the guitar amp room with me dicking around with a line6 POD.

the forth (on a head) was at a music store again and it was being played with a BC (Son of a) Beast, and I stopped playing once i used the guitar for 2 riffs... fuckign thing SUCKED!

But I played the JSX on an Ibanez RG (with stock pickups) and it had balls.

I havent had a chance to play the JSX.. but it sounds like you havent had a fair chance with the XXX... those stores have lame rules, and the son of a beast is a pos toy that comes in a box with a free poster!!

Lucky me..i bought mine off some guy used and he let me play as loud as i want for a couple of hours..and i got a free set of tubes

Fuck, I like the XXX over a 5150 (stock). Thats because I'm retarded though.

you gotta let them know(or at least think) you're really interested in the amp and willing to spend some big bucks... just be like, "so i'm on the market for a new gigging amp, is there anyway i can blast a couple of these amps so i can get a feel for them and see if they can handle what i'm going to need?"

i think the xxx slays the 5150 for clean tone.... it also has a better "buzzsaw" distortion... but overall tone and kick-ass-ness, i still prefer the 5150 and 5150 II.

5150 stock, does this mean like with original tubes? how many tubes are there is it just the 6l6's and the el34 or whatever or are there more

4 Sovtek 6L6's and 5 Chineese 12AX7's i think..

i think they sound fine stock.

you can mod anything in it. electronic modification, power source, comsetic(iv seen some marshalls with a plexi glass front instead of the black mesh thing)
