Gothernburg is an area of Sweden, I believe. I think that's where Lost Horizon comes from too.

In Flames tunes to C, so that may help. Learn your scales and music theory, use harmony guitar lines a lot, especially diatonic 3rds. Just learn to play there songs, and even when you're not trying to sound like them while writing a song, it'll sound somewhat like them if you dedicate yourself enough, it just rubs off on you.

use a lot of thirds when harmonizing, fourths as well.

An interval between two separated, simultaneous notes of two and a half steps is harmonizing in perfect 4ths. For example:

|Gtr1
-----
-----
-----
-----
--4--
-----
|
|Gtr2
-----
-----
-----
--4--
-----
-----

An interval between two separated, simultaneous notes of three and a half steps is harmonizing in 5ths. For example:

|Gtr1
-----
-----
-----
-----
--4--
-----
|
|Gtr2
-----
-----
-----
--6--
-----
-----

Harmonizing in perfect fourths is mildly dissonant whereas harmonizing in 5ths is highly complimentary.

i read that in some article with shadows falls. be careful when writing goteburg type music, too much melody makes a song sound cheap and have very little replay value, even though it may seem great at first.

play a lot of melodic riffs, use pentatonic scales, improvise them and combine them with more brutal powerchord riffage.

that should get you a long way, I guess thats how I started out. I don't know if it works for you.

Göteborg is Sweden's second largest city. It's not an "area", and it's not "göteburg" as Transient said. It's Göteborg. Or, since you guys are mainly from english speaking countries, Gothenburg. Don't misspell it, please. It's annoying. We don't go around writing San Francesca or anything...

About writing that kind of music, I'd just listen to alot of it, and play alot of it, and it should rub off and affect my writing. I don't know if it works for you, but it usually works for me.

B.t.w., 10 points to the first non-european to name the third largest city in sweden, with correct spelling (without looking it up, of course).

You're right about Stockholm being #1. But, nope, Uppsala is not right (but you spelled it correctly. How do you know this kind of stuff?).

Keep guessing. (I'm off to bed now, but I'll be back tomorrow.)

its a root 5th and octave

now tell me what the root and 5th looks like
--5-------- octave
--5-------- 5th
--3-------- root

go back to your collage corse boy, you just got pwned by a 15 yr old

Thank you johnmansley for saying the right thing, let me add, A guitar is tuned in 4ths E-F-G-A, 1-2-3-4, sharps and flats dont count, thats why a power chord is notated like E5 or A5 cause its in a 5th interval. So yea just cause its the fifth fret doesnt mean its tuned in 5ths, you know guitar isnt the only instrument that utilizes music theory, im pretty sure every instrument does.

EDIT-Yea i didnt even see that post by necro-butcher, but good fuckin job necro, lol college course

Well, from my knowledge of European football, I'd say either Malmo, Solna (where AIK play) or Halmstad. Hmm, I'll go for Malmo.

Since there hasn't really been alot of guesses, I guess I'll give at least 5 points to John, even though he's at least semi-european (you Britts out there on your island, pff! ), because Malmo is the correct answer (except it's really spellt Malmö, but I don't really except you guys to write those weird letters).

Good man! Check At The Gates out, they practically invented the Gothenburg sound. Slaughter Of The Soul and Terminal Spirit Disease are particularly excellent works from them.

G_urr_A: Now you have to guess the third largest city in England

That may be true for German. I wouldn't know, since I never took German (I took French instead). It's not true for Swedish though. Those Å Ä and Ö letters are just letters like any others.

And john, ehm.... That's a good one. Naturally, I'll say London is the biggest. But that's really all I know. I'd say Manchester and Newcastle ought to be within the top 5. Sadly I don't know much more. But I think I'd be able to name 70% of Europes capitols and more than 35 states in the US.

Liverpool and Birmingham are, now that you mention them, cities I would have thought to be "up there". Leeds surprises me. Oh, well, I was half wrong.

This has got kinda off topic, hasn't it?

New York (including it's suburbs) has over 18'000'000 inhabitants. It's one of the largest cities in the world.

gothenburg style guitar playing uses a lot of chugging on the open low e in between higher notes.

one band that is a fine example of gothenburg style death metal is black dahlia murder. even though they're from detroit they pull off the sound perfectly.

black dahlia murder plays in drop C but one song goes..

---12--10--8-7-8-7-5
00---0---0--0-0-0-0-0

that's a perfect example of a standard gothenburg type riff.

another band that uses this alot is at the gates..who practically invented the gothenburg death metal sound. just listen to the bands a lot and learn the songs.
