The Notes Per Minute Thread
How many notes per minute can you play? To figure this out, you just play on one string for twenty seconds, and then slow it down, count the number of notes you played, and multiply that number by three! Or you can always do thirty seconds and multiply that number by two.
Unfortunately, I scored low. Right now the fastest I can play is 645. That sounds like an average/okay speed, but I want to be able to soon play a steady 800 or something. Practice!
Post your Notes Per Minute... and please be truthful.
NOTE: (I'm talking WRIST speed, tremelo does not count, 'cause anybody can reach over 900 with tremelo)
2nd NOTE: If this thread doesn't die out after one day, we could use it to keep track of our progress in speed. Maybe we could also keep track of other "stats".

Hmm. Clarify. No tremelo? So, like 3 different notes played over and over as fast as possible? like-
---12-13-15-13-12-13-15-13-12-etc---- ?
or just down strokes? whats wrist speed? Clarify.
This sounds interesting, I just want to know how to do it.

well, i'm pretty noob but i think he just means alternate pick a string for 20 seconds without tremoloing from your elbow, which apparently isn't good to do anyway. counting how many times you pick it.
But i do have to point out that that isn't really how many notes you could play for a whole minute, because fatigue would slow your pace abit, after a real minute.

Ya, i'll need clarification on the tremelo thing as well. I was under the impression that tremelo picking was just picking as fast as you can and wasn't an actual technique.
And tiring out after a minute? You need to build some endurance boy! Try playing a full 45 minute set of good old 200bpm thrash metal. I've gotten to the point where my arm has been sore for days like I was lifting weights.

Yes, alternate pick. If you really want to do it for a minute, go ahead. I just do 20 seconds because it's easier. I'd still come to around the same 640-650 range even if I did it for a minute straight. Using any way you'd like, figure out how many notes per minute you can alternate pick(which involves using mainly your wrist for playing, and no "elbow"). If you want, you can also just post how fast you can possibly pick, using any technique you'd like(just make sure you say what technique your using, don't just write "1000" without clarifying how you did it, or else you'd be Yngwie)

Can someone who's really good at guitar help me out here, and explain this? I'm obviously not clear when I say to ALTERNATE PICK, WHICH MEANS TO ONLY USE YOUR WRIST WHEN PICKING. Pick on ONE string for ONE minute. Record yourself, and then count HOW MANY NOTES YOU PLAYED IN ONE MINUTE. No sweeping or any other techniques beside ALTERNATE PICKING.
ALTERNATE PICKING= Using wrist only while going UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN, etc... I'm being serious when I'm asking for help in explaining. I thought I had it clear from the beginning.
http://www.worldguitar.com/alternatepicking1.html
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/less..._technique.html
In the second lnk, the guy giving the lesson says: Some players favor the stiff-wrist approach, which restricts all movement to the elbow joint. The circular motion approach, employing only the thumb and index fingers, is another technique. But most players get the best results by initiating all movement in their wrist . Use the technique that feels the most natural to you and always remember to keep your wrist relaxed.

well when i alternate pick, I dont use my wrist. I use the muscles in my thumb and index finger. My wrist barely moves. I suppose it was clear what you're saying. My playing with strict alternate picking is around 500 (full control maintained, faster if I'm sloppy about it) notes a minute, but with legado can get up around 800 easily.

You forget that tremelo picking is just very fast alternate picking. Most guitarists are very sloppy with their tremelo technique because they thrash away with no regard for control or technique. I tremelo pick using my thumb and index finger and I can go pretty fast but I have yet to time it.
Once properly warmed up, I can play a 6-string, 8 note per string chromatic exercise at a rate of 16 notes per second.

im a bit unsure of what your asking, but
i thaught:
alternate picking - up down up down the playing style
alternative picking - sweeping
tremelo - updownupdown the action (usually one string one fret )
tremelo arm - another name for whammy bar.
i can alternate pick anything at about 500 npm ish
i can alternate pick some things at about 7-800 npm ish
i can tremelo at 800+ npm
i can play legato three notes per string triplets at 330 bpm ish (close to 1000 nps but when i do this its a bit irregular)
i can tap whole notes at 3 bpm
i can sweep in my dreams.

eh, don't your taps go way faster usually???
I have no idea how the hell I could count my notes but I can record it anyways, our other guitarist thinks I'm mighty fast, but I'm really not 'that' fast.

no. I just can't coordinate my right hand fingers to do whats needed.
I dont practise it though, maybe I will try when I nail sweeping.

If you have a sound program or a metronome you can figure out how many notes per minute you can play. Alternate picking is technically just how fast you can possibly play, but I was asking people to use their wrists. In that other thread(above) there were people asking for sound clips, maybe somebody could post one, because I'm not sure how(maybe someone could tell me?). If anybody puts down a speed, then write out how you did it.
ex: 645 npm(or bpm) using alternate picking, and only with my wrist.
600 using thumb and index.
850-900 using forearm/elbow to play.
800 sweeping
ex for stats: I can sweep over 6 string, here is a tab: (post tab)
I can get up to 12 notes per seconds playing this: (post tab)
Or we could always ditch this thread and leave our worries behind, because it's getting confusing in here.

If I were to do to this
e---12-13-15-13-12-13-15-13-12-etc----
as fast as I could for 20 seconds and calculate how many notes in a minute, would that count? It wouldnt be tremelo picking.

I'll definetly post later, I'm not home now. Don't know how I'm gonna count the notes though. My recording program can't slow down files.

18 notes a second without tremlo picking. 16th triplets at 180 bpm. 1000+ notes a minute. You should gauge your speed by notes per second not minute.
I dont think i'd be able to keep it goin for a whole minute.
