Alice in Chains
If you don't like 'em...yay for you, please don't post here. But I've been kind of curious...who on metaltabs likes them? I'm not gonna bother digging into the subject on how they arn't "grunge"...I bet thats the kind of heat I'll get for making an Alice in Chains thread
If no ones likes them...all I can say is its my life in Layne Staley words. Fuck I'm emo

I like their stuff. Layne's lyrics are pretty good (they eerily hinted at what was to become of him eventually) and I like Jerry Cantrell's guitar style as he had plenty of ideas. AIC and Soundgarden were the best grunge bands by far, although I'd take Soundgarden over AIC most days.

I never gave Soundgarden a chance really...I like having only one "guilty pleasure" band. I'll download some SG...any suggestions? I already know Black Hole Sun and I don't care for it too much

I'd recommend pretty much all of their stuff, but if you want specific songs try Rusty Cage, Outshined, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mailman, Limo Wreck, 4th Of July or Tighter And Tighter. All good songs.

Alice in Chains is very good stuff. They play in Eb, I believe. They were able to do something that many of today's bands can't do: Establish a groove. They can keep it heavy and at the same time groovy. Decent heavy vibes. Who cares about categories, these guys were good.

Yeah, mostly Eb and drop tuning down half a step. Fuck emo-core, emo-rock, emo-whatever. AIC is real emotion.

shit i like em alot, jerrys guitar stuff was simple yet awsome and laynes voice was fucking errie at times, it was cool to hear them come out at a time when noone really gave a fuck about grove and tone, and cared more about making sure they sounded like they were garggaling merbles and had mud flowing outa their amps
and soundgarden kicked A too

AIC is great! I love their music. I remember when Layne died, or at least the day the world found out about it. I was just shocked and sad No more AIC never ever again. It's not like you could just replace someone like Layne.
I never got a chance to see them live and I'm sad about that now. I UL AIC on the FTP. In fact I'm...now listening to "Get born again" and feel like crying Nothing like AIC while drunk or in any other altered state of mind and, like M=L mentioned, the next morning while hung over too.
Basically, I love AIC just as much as I love the greatest of all metal both equally.

Well, Soundgarden was some big time stuff in the 90's. Everybody knew them in my highschool. The ex-singer is currently in Audioslave. Chris Cornell, I believe-good vocalist.
Soundgarden was good, heavy, alternative. I would rank them up there with AIC. When the Super Unknown album came out, it got a whack load of radio airplay as well.

I always liked Soundgarden more than AIC, though both had great singers and guitarists. Nirvana just sucked; so did Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, but to a lesser extent.

Please don't compare Chains with Nirvana.

I glad someone else see it the same as me. Its even worst that the chick from TLC died the same day and everyone focused on her death other than Layne's, like she influenced any form of music. Layne was around during MTV's good years and influenced bands like Cold, TLC gave us that annoying No Scrubs song.
I don't know you I like better, AIC or STP. Dirt or Core? Thats a tough one. I also like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but not as much as AIC and STP. Sadly I know both bands will never get back together.

shiiit Alice in Chains, there we go boys, that is a great band. Nutshell is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Soundgarden are alright, efinately alot of good songs but as for complete albums they never got it down. STP kicks except for the later stuff. Pearl Jam, or Mr. Vedder annoys the fuck outta me, the bastard never shuts up and lets the music go, he always has to be doing something. Nirvana has a new box set out now, 3cd's and a DVD of live stuff apparetly.

cxmachine check out boggy depot too (cantrell)
Alice in chains fucking rule. Jar of flies is a sweet album, unplugged comes close behind too. I agree with you father, Nutshell is a fucking beautiful song man.
metallife why wouldn't you compare chains with nirvana? they're both the same genre. Nirvana were a greatly talented band too. (you don't have to shred, blast beat, etc. to be talented). Very deep and emotional. Chains and nirvana both.
I like some of pearl jam. Immortality is a wicked song. But I find it gets on my nerves.
Soundgarden are sweet, same with early Stp.

Lets not get out of hand by placing AIC in the same box with the likes of STP, Soundgarden, Nirdvana, and other bands that just so happened to kinda sound like them. AIC was around many years before the name grunge was even thought of and I don't think they sound anything alike. Grunge was copied over by every loser kid on the planet and once Kirk showed everyone that he was the biggest loser by killing himself, everone really started to kiss his now dead ass I hate the fact that all those grunge bands had music that poorly reflected even the smallest amount of how great AIC was and still is. Not that they were copying AIC all together, but it's like, if your from Seattle or going to claim your from Seattle just to make sure your band gets played back in the 90's then you had better have something depressing and that sounds like AIC. I hate grunge to this very day because of that I don't think AIC is or was grunge or alteritive. I can understand poeple liking Soundgarden over AIC because it all opinion, but just remember that soundgarden was thrash metal before they sold out, cut their hair, changed there music. Anyone else remember soundgarden back when they were metal? They were pretty good at it too. AIC never changed their style. They did some acustic stuff but it was still AIC to the bone.

Amen to that. I actually recently got into AIC (thank you San Andreas). My brothers would listen to them all them time back when I was younger (not too long ago). I would always see the "Dirt" album lying around, and it kind of freaked me out (nothing close to the "South Of Heaven" album, which I made my mom put in the closet. Kinda ironic how that was one of the albums that got me into metal). Whenever I listen to AIC, their feeling and attitude just totally makes me say ,"Wow". Their stuff was quite a trip. Soundgarden are also great (Matt Cameron is a great drummer).

You can comapre any two bands...whether its a bluegrass band and a metal band or a rap group and a country band. I just hate Nirvana and hate everything they stand for and it confuses me why so many people think of Nirvana when they see the words "Alice in Chains". I mean...its like some record producer closed his eyes and pointed his finger and whichever band it landed on, got famous. Nirvana were the lucky one.
And I wouldn't say they are the SAME genre. I mean...Alice in Chains are definatly not "metal"...they might even be more grunge than anything...but they arn't crap. I really can't even begin to describe why AIC shouldn't be in the same boat as Nirvana. Just listen to every song AIC wrote and then listen to Nirvana. Ouch....

I dig Alice in Chains. Probably the most metal out of the grunge bands.
Shit, I'd put them in the same category as alot of sludge metal bands. Heavy in a slimilar way.

Man... I TOTALY agree with you! I mean just having Alice in chains and Nirvana in the same sentence just reeks insult
Alice in chains were/are and always will be THE grunge band IMO. Nirvana on the other hand are worthless - their music, their lyrics and what they stand for. and I would just like to say R.I.P Stanley!! he was incredibly talanted and charming (from what I heard)

I would say that Soundgarden were the most metal of the grunge bands. Listen to songs like 4th Of July and Mailman, Rusty Cage and Outshined and you should be able to see that no other grunge band came close to them in the metal stakes.

I'm adding on to that list. Jesus Christ Pose, Face Pollution, Rhinosaur, Pretty Noose, Burden in My Hand, Ty Cobb, Fell on Black Days, Head Down, and The Day I Tried to Live. You already named 4th of July, my favorite song of theirs.
For the record, I love AIC. Very emotional stuff. Not metal, not technical, not something I would recommend to other metalheads. Just something I personally enjoy. I'm pretty well into grunge period, but AIC are my favorite. Their first album is my favorite, something you won't hear from a lot of people. Most people prefer Dirt. My favorite non-metal song is Love, Hate, Love. It's kind of neat AIC died before they started to suck, unlike Stone Temple Pilots who don't realize they will never be as good as they were on Purple and Core.

Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger is quite an enjoyable listen from time to time, as for AIC, I enjoy listen to some of their stuff from time to time...

I agree chris, facelift is an awesome album. It's what got them into the "metal scene".

Alice in Chains.....is good shit to listen to, and the same with Collective Soul. I really like their stuff but it after a while it can get boring.....

Yes they are genius. Lane had one of the most distinctive voices ever.
