i use ernie ball 10-46 right now, but i am prolly gonna move to 10.5-48 or 11-50 soon, for standard, sound better for chording, plus any leads that i do play are clean or midly overdriven, jazz/blues type leads, so speed isnt really a factor in my gauge choice.
i would say balls are best, but daadarios are good strings as well. it all comes down to personal preference.

There are no such things as the best strings. Like MoonRaven said, it's all personal preference. Personally, all I use is Dean Markley Blue Steel strings. I've never had one break on me before, and the coating has never even come off them before.
I don't know what gauge you play, but here is the 10-46 gauge...

the reason the coating has never come off is because blue steels arent coated, they are cryogenically frozen, which supposedly makes them last longer, tone wise. good strings, i used to play the 11-52's all the time.

ernie's rust up real fast, and dont sound to great. d'addarios are the only strings ive played that actually smell after a few weaks
but id say d'addario 10's.

GHS Boomers .10-.46
They fucking own the d'addarios i've used so far. D'addarios tend to break somewhere near the bridge.

as soon as i started to play metal i didnt break strings either
if you keep them clean and dont strum your guitar too hard they wont break.

the breaking probably has more to do with your technique, not all strings are created equal.
for some people ernie ball's might break all the time(they did for me) and some cheapo musicianfriend strings might last forever... yet for somebody else, ernieballs' might seem undestructable..
i think boomers are alright, the tone they give doesnt apeal to me as much as addarios... i just like the way boomers have thin ass high strings and thicker low strings.
i play .12's D standard.. thick ass strings give thick ass tone imo. i used to play .09's in standard E, then i decided they're were to sissy and thin sounding, so i moved to .10's, much nicer, less flop and a heavier sound. but now that i'm tuning down a step i needed thicker strings.

GHS aren't bad, their boomers are cool, if you want something shrill, you might try ghs brights?? a bit dodge, but i've used them a few times as the shop was out of the other kinds. i'd say 10s for eb.
If you play alot of tremolo stuff/ bolt thrower style riffs + have a horrible guitar like me with a saddle that breaks strings, just go for the cheapest!
ernie ball rock. I love ernie ball. They break quite quickly though...

i use d'addario 10's, they keep there sound. I used to use ernie ball 10's and skinny top, heavy bottoms. I want to try out some elixirs, i here there good but fairly expensive. I also want to try out some strings which are flatwound (well at least i think its flatwound) so that the strings are really smooth not like addarios. Any ideas as to any companies which sell them?

DR Hi-Beam 10's in standard tuning. They do sound bright, so you might try them, Infinity.

hmm i use different strings depending on my tuning. for my low tuned SG, i use GHS zakk wylde set, the ones that have light tops and heavy bottoms. i think its like 10 or 11 to 54 or something. for my standard tuned schecter i use addarios as well, usually 10-46 or 11-48. i had nothing but problems with ernie ball when i used them. also those x rockers are suprisingly nice, i had a set i threw on my V and they have been working out so far

from what ive learned over the decades....when i first started playing i used Ernie Balls for years just because thats all i knew to but, then at one point i tried d'addiaro....i never used Ernie Ball again. I used them for a few years randomly trying new strings to see if there was anything better and one day picked up a pack of Dean Markley...been using them ever since. Med 11-52.

Yeah, Daddario 11 are awesome. Didnt break for about 2 or 3 months! I went back to 10's and they died EXACTLY a week after purchase. Complete rubbish. 11's rule. I use E and D mostly with the 11's, but they are still firm at B. Great strings.
How the fuck do you guys play with 9's? Fuck that.

I have Ernie Balls Heavy Bottoms on my guitars right now (except acoustic which has GHS Lights and a 7 String which has Power Slinkies). I hate Ernie Balls, to tell the truth. I like D'addarios and GHS the best, particularly GHS for acoustic since I like the feel and tone.
Oh ya, and when it comes to breaking strings, Ernie Balls suck. I broke three low E strings in one day. Haven't broken many GHS's though, so they are my top choice. I like tone that will hear complex chord with a bass and melody since I don't like to play with another guitarist.

I used Dean Markley for years until my buddy at the guitar shop threw me a set of La Bella Hard Rockin' Steel 9's. I do alot of tremelo bends and dives..."Sava fans can tell by my nic" And the flex-action-detune-retune work I do constantly never seems to bother the tuning, tone, strength and durability of the strings. I also use stainless steel and copper pics. Had a few strings break...mostly "G" but I put my sets through ALOT of harsh playing conditions. 2hrs a day no matter what, 6 hrs a day twice a week and Fri-Sat shows or pratice for 12 on a saturday. I change them...every 3 weeks. They are hard to find and not cheap. Most stores will have to order them. Go to a store that carries high end acoustic guitars and they MIGHT have them. La Bella are popular among acoustic players for their tone values. I'm sure the store will be glad to order a few for ya with a discount. $usa 10.00-15.00

My friend plays daddarios and they break on him constantly. I'm happy with my Ernie Ball skinny top heavy bottoms in D flat. I also like Dean Markley Blue Steels.

GHS are like gods to me. I jump around a lot in tunings and i can keep the fuckers on for months and I never broke a string using them. I've broke plenty of D'addarios and when i first started i used ernie ball and broke a few of them. Right now i have GHS TNT's (Thick and Thin). I used to use GHS Low Tuned or whatever they're called but I never see them around any more. GHS just seems to get the best tone and the tone lasts the longest and they never break.

I used to use D'addario .10's and they where always breaking and stuff, and sounded not that great. Then I switchet over to Power Bright .10-.52 heavy bottoms and they fucking own the D'addarios and I've never ever broke a string since I switched to them

The guitarist & bassist in Cradle of Filth uses Rotosound strings. They're insanely good!

I used to always get D'addarios back in the day, but I took the plunge and went for the Elixer's upon the suggest of a friend - best 10.99 you can spend on your guitar in my opinion. The tone is so clear, crisp, and clean - 1000% better then any of the lower priced strings I have heard or played on (Ernie ball, D'addario etc). Also, the ones I use are Nanowebs "Ultra Thin Coating" - feels great on the fingers, and I think its part of the reason the strings have such good tone.
I use the Mediums (.11 - .049), but you may want the Thins (I think they're .09)

i use them on my acoustic, because they last a long time, and always sound new... plus they're much smoother and easier to play than non coated strings.. all these attributes make them perfect for acoustics imo.
i don't play them on my electrics because with electrics i don't always want the brand new string sound... and if you play only elixers for to long and then try to switch back to regular strings, you'll need to rebuild your callouses. ouch...

You can give it a shot, but I doubt it'll work. I tried that once by mistake when I got plastered. I woke up a little later and had about 3 of my strings bent to shit and were very tightly wrapped around the guitar, only 3 were on. Certainly, not one of the best house parties I've been to, and it wasn't even my guitar.
But anyways, I haven't stopped using Dean Markley strings for my Ibanez' ever since I first tried them. Long lasting, and great tone.

I fucking hate Ernie Ball. My local shop was out of my Daddario, so I had to buy a pack of those. They fall out of tune, feel like shit, and one just broke while I was playing today (not that all strings don't break, but i've only had them 2 weeks).

I bought several packs of Gibson 740's a while back and love the feel/sound.
However...a friend told me that Gibson doesn't even really make strings...that they are made and packaged for them by a diff company.
Is this true and if so...who makes em?
Also...I was given a pack of ErnieBall once....sounded horrible....like a freaking banjo.....twang twang twang. What's the deal with that?

they are, but they will sound like shit, the reason being that electric guitar strings are made from magnetic materials, a steel core with either steel, nickel plated steel, or a straight nickel wrap, acoustic string are steel with a bronze wrap, bronze is not a magnetic metal, therefore the p/u's will only "see" the core moving, and thats all you will hear.
