A lot is about image.
Image sells, and people buy. I know lots of people who think they are brutal and savage because they like "aggressive" music like Marilyn Manson and those bands where the guitarist has some sort of weird beard and knows two chords, which he plays all the time, exept in the verses, where he plays two different strings which fits perfectly to the hip-hop-rhythm in the background.
Marilyn Manson is VERY different from Mayhem and that kind of bands, coz Manson is all about "I'm bad as Hell"-image. He wants as much attention as possible, and he gets it(unfortunately...)

Not all death metal is good.....there's a lot of shit metal out there too.......but i was mainly just talking about bands like manson, slipknot and spears......they all want the same thing. Anyways..i said all this before.

Anyways, about 7 years ago i started liking music as a whole. I started off with Silverchair (at the time they were starting off and were big). I liked more alternative type stuff.....like I Mother Earth, Bush, Everclear (kind of), and probably my fav, TOOL....that was about it. Then a year later i bought my first metal cd....Metallica (Black Album). I loved it. I listened to it non-stop for about 8 months. Then came x-mas time, when i saw the "Seasons in the Abyss" video on tv. That changed me. I couldn't stop thinking about it....i saw it once again a few months later and i couldn't take it......i bought Seasons. Holy fuck man, i couldn't beleive what i was hearing......insane speed, thrashing riffs, crazy solos....like nothing i've ever heard before...even Metallica wasn't this fast and tight.

Then came more Slayer albums......about a year and a half later i got into Cannibal Corpse (didn't care for vocals off the start, but these guys' playing style blew me away). I also got into Morbid Angel around the same time too.....the song "Where the slime live" got me......that solo still puzzles me, and amazes me as well. Then later on came Immolation, which probably had the most impact on my musical interest. They soon became one of my favorite bands......i still consider Slayer to be #1, but i listen to way more Immolation than i do Slayer.

After that i got into Incantation...that took a little while to like, couple months. It just kept going from there......Carcass(before immolation i think), Nile, Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Enter My Silence, Vital Remains (earlier on), Death (another HUGE impact), Beheaded, Dimmu Borgir, Disgorge......those are basically the bands i listen to the most nowadays.

That's my history of music. I never really went into the nu-metal stuff. I naturally stayed away......even when Limp Bizkit was still starting off and a small band, i hated em. Same with Korn, never liked that band. They always pissed me off how talentless they looked while playing.

I find myself getting into faster, harder, more insane type metal as time progresses. I really like what is called "Brutal Metal" or whatever...."Brutal Death" maybe. Anyways....it's all good.

All of us hear are tired of discussing and explaining to new-comers why we like/hate metallica. We've already said it all before. A thread in Bands was just closed today because it asked the same god-damn question you just asked.

No one really cares about this band......it just angers up everyone because everyone's opinions are different about this. So, just forget about this, and let's move on.

to come back at the start of this thread (snotclip)...it's funny, because a while ago (back in 2000 or so...dunno) i also thought slipknot was brutal and stuff...a week ago i went to this part (with reaaaaaly bad music...just about all the "heavy" nu(/non)metal bands mentiound in this thread, and eventual;y this kid put on a slipknot cd...man, their wussier than i can remember (that those kids actualy consider that "heavy")

I like Mudvayne, I don't consider them nu metal. Slipknot and everone else I really dispise. I don't know anyone who thinks Mudvayne is Death Metal, sadly I can't say the same for Slipknot. Mudvayne is the only band other than death metal, other than Tool and Type O Negative, when I think of it.

Just because he doesn't show off doesn't mean he can't. He sure as hell displays little talent, none of his solos are hard, but maybe he does it on purpose. And now the new metal thing or hard rock or what the fuck ever. There are some hard rock and New metal bands i like but i'm not one of those punkass bandwagon jumpers. It seems once a band hits popular culture everone likes them, even when half of them don't the lyrics to their favorite song. But my favorite band is shadows fall and stumbled opun them. So i know there is big difference between New Metal and Actual hardcore kick ya in the junk metal.

The aforementioned bands are disposable, for the sheer fact that they are gimmicks. I mean wearing masks WTF, its directly aimed at impressionable kids, no-one can argue that, at least no-one with a brain.

I dont like the MTV bands i dont follow them, i dont take a blind bit of notice, if i did id watch Top of The Pops or Pop Idol.

People who have the perception of them being METAL etc, do not know the definition, its a mainstream reaction to make anything slightly different to be controversial. it gives them more to write about in the tabloids, in pop magazines and of course IT SELLS.

When I get a metal band, I will have powersofterror dolls everywhere

i think that people just eat up whatever the media feeds them. i mean, anything thats on the radio or mtv will make it big, and sells for a period of time. then the fad passes, the bands make their money and its over, then new ones move in. it just happens to be the shitty music that gets recognized, its all about the publicity. if bands like cephalic carnage and dying fetus got constant airplay, they would be just as famous as disturbed and shit. but i think its better this way cuz fame usually ruins bands. look at metallica for instance, some may laugh at me but i think their stuff from back in the day was good, it was great for that time period. then they made it big and sold out and their music went to hell. then they got greedy and its like they just try to write music that people want to hear so that it will sell.
