Doom Metal
Can someone please clarify what Doom Metal is? I've heard the term around a lot, but I seriously don't understand how a band is labeled Doom Metal. Thanks.

doom metal is very slow, drone-like, melancholyish metal.. check out Evoken. they're Doom/Black Metal.

doom would be the basic genre that black sabbath originated. while almost every genre quotes sabbath as an influence, doom is usually the closest to the source. ie. they didn't add the extra brutality that death brings to it. sound is usually slower or mid tempo and often rather riff oriented. very melodic and borderline catchy. the lyrics can often be dark though usually not satanic dark, can also be similar to power metal lyrics. good bands to check out would be cathedral, st vitus, trouble, electric wizard, some of my dying bride and of course black sabbath. this should give you a rough idea. i know i regurgitated some of the last post but what he said is good too
cheers
and fyi this is probably my favorite sub genre of metal (well the doom/death mix)

there are a couple of kinds of doom, to my knowledge.
there is doom/goth, which is beautiful stuff like virgin black and the eternal.
then there is sludge doom, massively slow, massively distorted/tuned down guitars. this is bands like iron monkey, sleep, cathedral, etc.
dont quote me on this though man, im the last person that should be talking about doom. father death will help you out.

Funeral Doom is great, extremely slow and dark doom metal. Thergothon and Skepticism have made this very fine.

"hillbilly metal" will do fine.

Corrosion of Conformity and Crowbar should fit. And Soilent Green, if their extreme side doesn't weigh out the southern blues for you. None of them sound as much like Pantera as Pissing Razors, though.
And, so as not to be completely off topic, Crowbar can be considered doom as well. And, if so, then in my eyes they're the best doom band.

Uniqueness tend to not fall in any standard descriptions. You can't give it a 'normal' 'bla bla black/death/doom/thrash/whatever metal' description, so you have to make your own up to describe it.

Acid Bath has moments of it too. And also moments of very Southern sludge.

"Down" is sort of the "heavy southern rock metal" you guys are talking about. Can't say I know much about doom metal, though. Death metal all the way for me.

True, but they don't sound very Southern Rock. I do like them, though, when they were still around and it wasn't Bower guesting on every other band from New Orleans' record.

If a Pantera fan doesn't know Down, he doesn't deserve being pointed to them. But that is basically every band we've mentioned in answer to Trendkill's question, minus Acid Bath and Soilent Green.

If i didn't know about down, i'd be a pretty ignorant pantera fan. (ignorant pantera fan. heh heh. that's about 90%).

Hahahahahahaha. If you hadn't, I definitely would have pointed that out. I remember points at which it was almost embarassing to say I liked them and group myself with other Pantera fans. Eventually I didn't care.
