Oh my, I saw that years ago. You should really see the whole movie. Good stuff.
And pay attention to Robert Johnson if you haven't heard of him. You'll learn alot about recorded blues roots. Clapton's new "Me and Mr. Johnson" is very good, but listen to some original recordings of Johnson, too.And learn a little of the man's history.

I was told that the kid's bottleneck bit is actually Ry Cooder, a bloody good slide blues player who actually recorded the first ever album on digital multitrack back in the early 80's.(70's?). Anyway, the end bit where he trounces vai is actually vai trouncing himself, (what a sport!we can't so he graciously defeats himself, at least someone can!)anyway, you can tell its a different guitar the kid is suddenly playing.
i did learn that classical style bit at the end from an article in Guitarist mag which had it tabbed, but doubtless it takes me as long to play as it took him to write. I've lost it now, but that end bit has NO sweep picks after the first obvious arpeggios, just before the gain goes up, but the bit before has the full arsenal of disgustingly good technique.

yes the kids guitar is overdubbed with vai's playing. and ry cooder wrote all the songs for that movie. including crossroads which eric clapton made a hit.
but it looks like that kid can actually play it with his fingers.

yea it looks like they filmed it in slow-mo then speed it up, but for a movie made in the 80's they did a damn good job of it, vai served himself, moral of that scene, dont sell your soul to the devil for guitar talent, cause the karate kid will always beat you
