The basic lowdown on what happened to Becker is:
in either 1989 or 1990, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, which I believe causes the muscles to waste away (somebody confirm/correct please). He was goven 3 to 5 years to live, but he's still alive today. I don't think he's been able to play guitar for a very long time now, it really is very tragic.

They're triggers, right, that you connect to, y'know, drums 'n' stuff.

Nah, they're small devices that sense when a drum or cymbal has been hit and then converts the sound into an electrical signal that gets sent to a box of tricks that allows you to add effects to and, more pertinantly, amplify the signal. A drummer would be able to explain it better than I could.

A lot of people say that using triggers is cheating by reason that you don't have to hit the drums as hard in order to be heard and so you can play faster due to less energy being spent. I don't believe it for a second as, due to the amplification, the drummer has to be very, very accurate otherwise every mistake will be load and clear for all to hear.

And another reason that people claim that using them is cheating is that, potentially, they could be used to cheat, since you can technically trigger your set to produce any sound. I personally don't buy that they're cheating, or even a sign of a mediocre drummer, unless there's some other evidence to back that up. If the drummer is playing to an attainable level of perfection rather than striving for the platonic ideal of a double bass drummer - which some do, with less uniformly perfect results - I see nothing wrong with it. At least nothing more than in using a drop tuning; it doesn't necessarily preclude talent. There are cases in which it assists and cases in which it serves as a crutch, but the mere fact that both cases do exist shows that it is not necessarily a crutch.
