You did say 'proper' metal, right? Your list is generally poor, however I do like Fear Factory and some Deftones and KsE tunes.

and soulfly and coal chamber are sort of my guilty pleasure bands, though to be honest i like sepultura and devildriver much better respectively.

as for most of the others expect to get slammed, considering deftones isn't really metal (especially post "fur")

only one of the above bands are satanists. i listen to metal for the (mostly) technical and talented musicianship and the atmosphere the various ones provide. the only band i like off your list is a couple of fear factory albums (soul, demanu)

Soulfly have basically re-hashed their first album 3 times now and even the first album was a regurgitation of Roots. It was semi-original to begin with but now Max has become a parody of his former self and if he wasn't so proud I bet he'd beg Sep to take him back.

Coal Chamber are not even worth wasting good disparaging adjectives on whereas Ill Nino are just a plane-jane mish-mash of abhorrent, sentimental emo lyrics and disgustingly blatant Soulfly-rip-off riffs.

ok good. you are speaking clearly and in sentences. as for your tastes i can't bitch too much. i am probably one of the more rounded members on here. i do like some in flames from time to time (anything from lunar strain to reroute). i have in recent times become a very big chimaira fan, though only of their impossibility album. existence was in my opinion mediocre and suffered from too much of the droning feel that plagues nu metal. i do agree in suggesting that you check out some of the less mainstream bands that are around nowadays. there is alot out there beyond death and black that you would probably dig but will never hear unless you look pretty hard.

The reason I dig Deftones so much is the amazing stuff that Stef Carpenter works out. I dig his effects, and I love the sound the got with the BOSS Hyper Fuzz pedal on the Addrenaline album.

thats cool, the only deftones album i could ever stomach was around the fur, and really only then because of my own summer and whatever track 4 is (the one with the really heavy opening drums). still there some much better arrangements out there you need to check out

In Flames... good singing? I find that hard to believe. :P Don't get me wrong though, In Flames are quite possibly my favorite band, but Anders' voice has been going downhill since Whoracle. Mikael's voice(on Lunar Strain) was much better, but the other albums kicked incomprehensible amounts of ass too... up until RtR.

Wether the band writes some satanic/anti-christian lyrics should be of no concern to you if they are good musicians... Regardless of my views on religion, Deicide are a much better band than P.O.D. for example. Some BM bands like Mayhem however aren't that great, some even went around burning churches and killing people to get attention(not that all black metal is like this, but Mayhem and Burzum are perfect examples). Black metal bands like Immortal, Ragnarok, In Battle, Bathory, and Naglfar kick ass. Black metal derives somewhat from the band Venom, which did something that sounded like Motorhead(thrash) with a taste of what black metal is like today.

Chimaira, Deftones, Mudvayne, Korn, Flaw, Soulfly, Dry Kill Logic, Slipknot, etc. are just simple talentless nu metal bands... anyone with a good taste in metal knows that those bands are complete utter gobshit. Not that all Nu metal sucks though... Devildriver are quite good, but mainly since they have huge influences from death and black metal(this is probably the only good NM band... apart from maybe SoaD). I don't have a huge affinity for metalcore/hardcore such as KSE, but some bands like Lamb of God, Stampin' Ground, Between the Buried and Me, and Dead to Fall plus a few others I do like(especially LoG).

Tool are a great band... just not exactly metal. And Tool use a double-bass drum quite often, so I don't know why the fuck you are trash-talking the use of double bass-drums.

You claim that you want "proper metal"? Proper heavy metal are bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Black Sabbath, Helloween, Ozzy Osbourne... that's as "proper" as heavy metal can get. But from what I can tell, I don't think you listen to these bands.

Of course then you have your good old 80's style thrash like the early Metallica and Megadeth, Sepultura, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, and Overkill. Death metal derives from thrash, which is why Sepultura -an extreme thrash metal band- sounded a lot like what death metal is today. I believe Possessed was the first DM band ever, but I haven't listened to it much yet.

Before you go around dissing black and death metal(or whatever other form of extreme metal), listen to the following bands:

Death metal: Deicide(not all their songs are great, just listen to "Scars of the Crucifix"), Dew-Scented, Morbid Angel(first 3 albums), Cannibal Corpse, Avulsed(last 3 albums), Decapitated(one of my favs), Behemoth(the recent stuff is death/black), Dying Fetus, Entombed(early), Amorphis, Dissection, Opeth, Dark Tranquility(like In Flames), Soilwork(early), Dismember...

Black metal: Burzum(not one of my fav's, but it is good), In Battle, Ragnarok, Immortal(get "At the Heart of Winter"), Bathory(early, since the later stuff is viking metal), Behexen, Naglfar, Tribes of Cain, Behemoth(early), Negator, Dimmu Borgir(just get the first album)...

For some interesting twists, go get some folk and viking metal. I doubt it's anything you've ever listened to: Vintersorg, Otyg, Finntroll, Skyclad, Moonsorrow, Bathory(later stuff), Mago de Oz, Cruachan, and Borknagar kick ass.

If you want some less extreme metal, go get some good European melodic power and speed metal. Most of it is cheesy as hell, but I like this style of music. Bands like Hammerfall, Dragonforce, Tierra Santa, Valhalla, Blind Guardian, Children of Bodom(I think anyone will love this band), Norther, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Nightwish(cheesy goth/power metal), and Helloween are some of the best this genre has to offer.

Hopefully I was able to change your view on this kind of music. I have the strange feeling that this is some sort of joke...

I beg to differ, there are death metal bands that write Satanic/Anti-Christian lyrics such as Deicide, Morbid Angel, and the recent Vital Remains album(thanks to the appearance of Glen Benton(Deicide) in the band). Most DM bands write about death and gore... which I generally prefer over blasphemous lyrics.

Regardless, if you appreciate the music, you won't really give a fuck about the message the lyrics try to put through.

Of that list, I like Fear Factory, like what I've heard from Killswitch Engage, enjoy a few Soulfly songs (though Sepultura is worlds better), and would never have gotten into metal at all if it weren't for the first two Deftones albums. I also like In Flames and Tool. I'm not entirely sure why any of those bands are more 'proper' than Death, Megadeth, Martyr, Anthrax, or anybody else you'd care to name. And that's all the time and effort this has deserved.
