Controlling Speed

I need some tips for controlling my speed on double bass...I can go really fast, or moderately fast, but nothing really in between without it sounding at least a little sloppy.

if your slow speeds are sloppy then your fast speeds are probably sloppy aswell, make sure you use your whole leg for double kicking, and just play lots of simple kick patterns, at slower tempos, doing this for a long time really does good stuff to your fast work!

Start doing everything slow and you will keep getting faster and faster...

Well, I listen to myself on tape while I'm going fast and it sounds real good. I haven't recorded myself doing slow. Maybe it's just a mental thing.

alot of times when you are going fast it sounds 'good' because you are going to fast to hear sloppyness, however when you slow down you can hear it, but I will take your word for it that your fast shit is cool, I recently had this problem cause I tightneded my springs up majorly, which imporved my speed, but god my slow triplets sound like cat piss!!!! so I am gonna be doing work on that!!!!

just gotta go back to basics and get the feel back!!!

Exclamation

I've found that many players overlook playing at slower speeds. I think playing slowly is more complicated than playing at superhuman bpm's. It forces you to analyze what you're playing. Sometimes slow is more flavorful.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I learned to play fast before I learned to play slow. But I listened to myself yesterday and I sounded pretty even going around 180 BPM.

I figured out that the thing that makes me sloppy sometimes is how my pedals are positioned. Sometimes they just don't feel right in a certain spot and it causes me to mess up.

Thumbs up

If you find that you can play 180 bpm's evenly, then that's great! Most GOOD songs only play at that speed. Any faster and a drummer begins to neglect the music, and starts playing for their own good. I personally max at about 190. A lot of drummers praise themselves for being able to play DB super fast, but many times they can only sustain for a short time. Leave the speed and novelties for solos.

At what speed is the double bass on the song Spheres of madness by Decapitated if anyone knows? Because I can go an that speed with no problem. I have no idea what my bpm is.
NZ, Do you have the regular axis beater or do you have the beaters that go forward? I heard the ones that are facing forward give more power but i dont know.
I use a Tama double pedal. Its like the iron cobra but a little bit cheaper. Im going to get an axis double pedal in the future.

I use the marksman beaters, not the Sonic hammers, I too have heard that they give more power/better sound, but the marksman beaters are fine, I quite like them!!!!
