Meshuggah Talk
I need to vent my frustrations and aspirations with other musicians about their god damn time signatures and psychotic drumming.....they are so crazy.....anyone else addicted to them like me?

I listen to them occasionally...they never really keep my interest that much, but they are good for a listen every once in a while.

Please dont compare DEP to Meshugga..
DEP is acually good..
Meshugga uses 8 stirng guitars and just grooves on the bottom 3 strings for 5 mins.
Yes i hate Meshugga... ALOT they seriously lsound like Nu-Metal to me, but hey everyone has their own opinion.

alright. Meshuggah is not Nu-metal. They have been around since 1989 (I know thats not very relevant) and they use to play seven strings tuned to Bb. The reason you shouldn't trash them is they play some of the most mind bending rhythms of any band I have ever heard. DEP just makes a bunch of racket if you ask me. You seriously need to re-evaluate your opinion on Meshuggah's music. It will change your perception of a lot of what you listen to. If you get a chance, check out their albums "Destoy Erase Improve" or "Chaosphere". They picked up the 8-strings on Nothing and the EP "I". If you just check it out, I guarantee you would love it.

Chaosphere was a piece of crap. The songs on it sounded offbeat, in my opinion. The vocalist didnt go along with the beat. Dillinger Escape Plan isn't that good either, it sounds like pure racket.
Why is it called "mathcore"? Is it the bastard child of math metal? I see no difference in the sound of mathcore or math metal.

DEP isent boring, hence why I enjoy them.
With a band like Meshuggah I could really care less if they used weird time signatures... dosent make them worth listening imo.
And yes YoungGuitarist they tune to F#
OMG OPINION!!! So dont any of you get in a hissy fit

im listening to "New Millenium Cyanide Christ"
Man this 3 chord thing is crazy!
I don't see what the fuss is. Perhaps I picked the wrong song to listen to. I mean the song isn't bad, very repetetive. Screw off time beats, be as off time as you want, it doesn't make you technical. That requires tough guitar/drum/bass playing.

This is true.
I guess you would have to see the song on paper to really understand the fuss....oh well. I know what you mean by the three chord thing.....kinda. They do a lot more than play three chords...they aren't a punk band. I just find that much off-time rhythms exciting. Look for yourself:

Ok i just downloaded the powertab of that song.
Dosent seem hard at all, extremely simple riff's and the timing isent that wacky.
Id fall asleep on stage if i had to play that though. The only time they used more than the bottom 4 strings is during the solo, whihc was pretty lame imo.
Maybe im retarded and thats why i dont like em

Nevermind then. I guess that polyrhythms don't appeal to you.

The polyrhythms come entirely from the drummer (Tomas Haake) so would more than likely be lost on guitarists such as myself and BLS. For guitar based polyrhythms check out Hate Eternal's King Of All Kings and Morbid Angel's Heretic albums.
Meshuggah are good - they mixed the formula up a bit when every (non-death metal) band and their rabid dogs were kicking out the same old standard riffs. Granted, they are not as 'interesting' as DEP - and DEP certainly have more energy to their music - but I like Meshuggah's deep rhythms that grind away at your skull. It's almost hypnotic at times but as you alluded BLS, one man's hypnotic is another man's boring.
Oh and Frederik Thordandal is an outstanding guitarist - his solos are insane!

Fredrik Thordendal solos like Allan Holdsworth on every drug William S. Burroughs ever took.
As for the riffs: you're either going to like them or you're not. But if you don't your standards are impossibly high. They're repetitive, but only because rhythm is the high principle for them. Their vocalist will seem to be off-time for the same reason: his voice is written into the song as another percussive instrument playing another polyrhythm.
Meshugga uses 8 stirng guitars and just grooves on the bottom 3 strings for 5 mins. This statment is about as true as if I said the same about Morbid Angel's use of a seven string. Literally.
They sound nothing like DEP and people who compare them are ants in the afterbirth.
I personally love them.

Its nice to find other people that appreciate it as well. HAve you heard their new EP "I" (that is EYE lol) it is one 21 minute long song, and it is the craziest I have ever heard Meshuggah. On Nothing they first started using 8-strings, but it was slow. On "I" it is really fucking fast with even more metric insanity. Check it out.

Meshuggah is pretty decent, though not a favorite. For me it's probably because i started with Nothing and went back (nothing was eh for me.) i'm a big fan of their older material though, so it won me over. I also have to agree about DEP... They just are too much noise for me

I was hooked on Contradictions Collapse for ages! personally, I love all their shit, even Nothing. I guess it would probably be harder for non-musicians to get into this band, but they are great. Tomas Haake is definately one of the best drummers on this planet. Freddy does sound like Allan Holdsworth (who rules as well) but he taps, which holdsworth didn't do.

the song "I" is my new definition of "Heavy"
off-beat stuff and polyrhythms is very technical...it's super-hard to keep in time. plus how many drummers do you know can even touch what Haake plays?

MESHUGGAH KICK ASS!!! Ive been listening to them for a long ass time.. I love every album, but DEI is the best. Meshuggah is very popular among my family (cousins and siblings), we've been listening to them for 10 years, I hope their new stuff beats all the other recent shit.

Holdsworth never tapped? I guess I never noticed on way or another. He certainly doesn't as much as Thordendal, or as frustratingly unintuitively. Few do.
I is good for letting us know the Meshuggah weren't slowing down permanently, and that they can still throw out some killer riffs. It's also good at letting us see why Thordendal and co. should not be writing epic-length songs. It has the feeling of being assembled from a bunch of riffs discarded in the recording process for Catch 33, which has me very excited for that record.

Actually, Catch 33 could be kind EP-ish (if you will). I read an interview with Haake and he said they are going to embrace this concept for Catch 33...but the next record will be full out normal record style. I don't give a fuck either way....Meshuggah is to badass for me to complain about.

The "concept" I mean is making an full-length album without breaks....kinda like "I"....just one really long ass song.

Oh. Then they should talk to the guy from Edge of Sanity, or at least get some more practice at writing long songs. I don't think it suits their style, but I'd be happy for them to prove me wrong.

My guitar teacher has met Allan Holdsworth and had deep and meaningful conversation with him. Apparently Holdsworth is a genetic freak, as well as having huge hands, his pinky finger is just as long as the rest of his fingers, there giving him enough reach to make tapping rather unnecessary.

There are a couple of awkward moments in that song, but for the most part I think the song flows pretty well. The quality of riffs makes up for the song structure.

That's by far the most ridicolous statement I've eveer read in relation to Meshuggah.
They are supposed to sound off beat...that is one of the many points of the bands rhythmic direction. If you couldn't figure that out from the offset you played that album then god help you.
And Meshuggah are NOT Mathcore....mathcore and math metal are the lamest terms for music I've heard, I mean consider this...Mudvayne were called Math Metal when they came out and I went along with it, I mean you can't deny Ryan Martinez is one hell of a bass player...but then I heard technical genres of metal and realised that there is absolutely no 'math' in math metal or mathcore.
And Meshuggah were originally going to use bass guitars but decided against it apparently. they tune to F# yes, but the amount of gain/pre and post eqing they use totally brings the treble frequencies back up....you only have to listen to songs like Stengah, Spasm and Rational Gaze (Nothing album) or the whole of Catch33 to realise that.
They may only use 3 strings in their rhythmns but there are amongst the most impressive, and Fred's solo's are most definately not crap. Not everyone can do that AND use a midi breath controller at the same time
The one thing that fucks me off is when someone...especially a musician will slate a band off and say they are shite.....you may not like it, but for fuck sake try and appreciate it for what it is, at least their not pretentious, there are very few bands that do what they do or sound like they sound (MateriA being one of them)
Now off my rant....I guess you can say I love Meshuggah to bits...they changed my whole way of thinking, with out them I wouldn't be as open minded to different things.

I fucking love meshuggah. "Nothing" was a little too slow and dragged on a bit but "DEI" and "Chaosphere" are gold in the world of metal. Future Breed Machine is right up there with Hammer Smashed Face and Angel of Death in my opinion. DEI was more organic and more accessabile but Chaosphere just kicked ass in about 8 different directions without taking a break. It takes some time to fully comprehend their songs but once it clicks, it clicks well.

ive actually had the priveledge of picking ryan martinies brain a few years back and you know what the first thing he put on the stereo was? chaosphere. because any musician with any appreciation for time and technicality absolutely needs to hear meshuggah (especially bassists and drummers). back before mudvayne went all poppy they used to have pretty kick ass rhythm parts too. i am in total agreement about meshuggah ruling with an iron fist. class A shit here, and theyve done wonders to improve my understanding of time.

I'm glad to see someone who respects mudvayne! Yes i know they are Nu metal, but their first album had some GREAT fretless bass parts and drumwork. The singer wasn't half bad either, compared to other nu metal freaks.

I personally used to hate the band. Simply because i couldnt grasp the concept of what the hell they were doing. One day it just clicked after i sat down and listened to catch 33. Now im officiallly obsessed with poly rythems. Textures is also the closet you'll ever hear to meshuggah, polars is one of the most amazing albums, check it out if u havent.

Yes! L.D. 50 was an incredible album. Everything after that totally blows but L.D. 50 will always be one of my favorites. Now im not very familiar with Meshuggah, any suggestions as to where to start?

Destroy. Erase. Improve.
Chaosphere
None
Contradictions Collapse
I
Catch 33

In that order, but they are all brilliant in their own way.

chaosphere is pretty fucking fantastic. destroy, erase, improve is also excellent. i agree that mudvayne has gotten incredibly watered down and simplified in a sad attempt at commercializing their sound, but hot damn LD 50 is one of the best performances by a rhthym section ive ever heard.

Surprised this thread is still going. I still love meshuggah as much as the first time I heard them. Catch 33 just blows my mind...and I is amazing still to me.

Out of the last three albums, which one is it most similar too? Cause if it resembles "Nothing" the most, then i think I will leave my Meshuggah collection as it is.

Actually, while I fully love Textures, MateriA are the closest thing to Meshuggah currently. Do a search for them on Myspace I think their link is www.myspace.com/materiaband
And yes, I absolutely loved L.D. 50 aswell...but not any album after that...they became more about happy harmony than their previous agression.
Still when I saw them live at Ozzfest 2001....That was one insane show, and watching Ryan slap the shit outta his bass was by far the most impressive thing I've seen live next to Meshuggah's hair metal syncronisation

I love meshuggah, great fun for me, I like the hypnotic almost dronning, groovy riffage! Gonna try learning some stuff of "Destroy, Erase, Improve" sometime, good fun! I really like "Future Breed Machine".
