Presence knob

Gay topic to start a new thead on i know, but what ever...

Anyways... the presence knob is realy starting to piss me off (on my bv120h) i cant stand the sound i get on solos with it turned up, and i cant stand the sound i get on rhythm (chords) when its turned down. so im constantly having to turn this little knob. i guess my question is, is there some way i can make a foot switch change it or somthing? and my other question what does this stupid little knob do any ways? i think it makes the sound have more crunch to it or somthing, i dont know.

oh yeah and im also having another problem, some days the sound i get is good, but somtimes is sounds like shit (cant explain how) does this happen to every one? i dont know if its my amp or me... damnit gutar is pissing me off today (one of those days my amp sounds like shit.)

The presence knob is an over all high frequency boost that adds crispy, glassy tone. The reason it does what it does during solos is cause the leads are being way over boosted and when its turned down the lower notes or your chords are not getting enough boost. The key is to find the balance between your treble and presence on the amp itself. Turn your treble up a little and the presence down and play around until it's perfect. The tone you are looking for is there somewhere and will work for your solos and chords.

I don't know why your amp sounds like shit some days and rocks others. Tubes are temperature sensitive. On tube amps temperature plays a big part in how your tubes react to signals and therefore effects your sound. If the room you play in charges temperatures often or if your amp is by a window where the sun can shine on it then I would believe that would be the reason why your tone changes. The tubes might need replacing too, as all tubes do from time to time. Good luck.

This is a weird question, at what room temperature do you think a tube amp would work best? I am gonna guess when it is cold in the room, cus thats how most electronics are. If so, do they make head cases with fans built in? The amp in question of course is a Triple Rec.

i have seen a couple heads with fans in there but not in stores so they could have been moded

yes the tubes are temperature sensative and also where it is will effect the sound, im guessing cause its a half stack it doesnt move from room to room but say your playing one day and your room is furnished a certain way, if your re-arange your room it will change slightly cause of the sounds bouncing around. i know for my amp( and i im guessing all) they sound best in a open enviornment

really the only thing you can do is mess with the setting to get a good middle ground or get a eq thing (pod ect)

normal temperatures, but it doesn't matter much, tube amps are supposed to heat up you know... how hotter tubes are run how better they sound (at high volumes, tube amps own!) my amps all get pretty hot, but it's no biggy, my rack has two vents in it and you can get rack cases with vents. but you don't need them for a stock triple recto.

Basically just what Def said. The tubes will get hot. They need to get hot, but not to hot. They will get as hot as they need to depending on the bias, but they still need good air venting to insure they don't blow.

It shouldnt...

If the tubes blows that means the Bias is set too hot.

This happens to me too. Heres what I think. Your hands. If your hands are soft and stuff then it could produce bad tone (does for me). Another thing I've noticed is if you were just listening a band with amazing tone and then start playing on your amp, it will make your amp sound bad compared making you think it sounds horrible.

thats kinda true (the listning thing, the hand thing just seem BS) but you gotta remember that they put it though an eg and a mixing board and usually do other digital shit to the sound too

Thanks. that clears it up a good bit. So a head case with some fans would be cool.

I guess I'm not sure about the hand thing but it does seem to make a difference for me.

never heard of tubes exploding, ever.... they just burn out when the signal is too hot(that has to be waayyy hot.) like a light bulb or something.
it is common that when a tube blows it will take a fuse or two with it... it happend to my guitarist's 5150, it just stopped making noise... replaced the tubes... still no noise... i checked the fuses... problem found. thank god fuses are cheap... i bought a pack for like $1.50.

if a preamp tube goes, the amp wont make noise.

depending on how the poweramp is setup it may still work, some tubes have to operate in pairs(class a/b)... so say something like the bv120h for example, 4 6l6's working in two pairs(one tube pulls the other pushes)... one pair burns out but the amp still runs... i know because this actually happend to my buddy's bv120h, it just got a bit quieter and sounded different... i noticed two of the tubes didn't glow. but one pair was still working, the amp was only running at half power.
class A each tube works independantley, like an orange ad5 for example... doesnt need to work in a series or pair... just a single powertube by itself.
but often you'll have more than one tube in a class A amp.
some amps are set up like an old fashion string of christmas lights, the peavey classic series combos is a good example of that, one burns out an the whole signal is lost so you have to figure out which one it was.

i have an avt 275 combo.this is a solid state amp but it does have a tube in it to add warmth(sounds good) but it als has a fan.one delemma i have about it is simple noise.not interference but it sounds like a computer or sumthing.
amps not loud enough though.

that might be part of the problem, the band thing, because i tryed it and after listening to pantera my sound was good, then i listend to COB and i was about ready to smash up my equipment.....

i think i need that pedal, i cant seem to play good any more unless i have every thing perfict, like if i try to play on my old guitar or on a crapy amp, i cant do it.... i think im doing somthing wrong, messing up the way i play somehow.... mabe i need to slow down my techical progress or somthing (been shreding 3 hours strait per day for several weeks now)

Keep in mind that what you hear on album is the work of months worth of tone seeking. Many tracks are taken using many different settings, guitars, amps, EQ, and effects. Only the best sounding are used and you shouldn't beat the hell out of yourself for not being perfect in the way your gear sounds.

if you reallt wanna compare yourself to cd's and such. then do it to live cd's which is much closer what the bands gear actually sounds like. for instance i cant get the wretched spawn sound, but if i listen to live cannibalim i can get a tone almost identical
