Beethoven was born in 1770 and died in 1827, during the Classical Era. The death of Beethoven is said the end the Classic era and the beginning of the Romantic era. If you heard that Beethoven was a Romantic, it is because most of this style is based on the generation of Beethoven in the 19th century. In short, most of the functions of the Baroque sonata were kept in the Classical Era but because of Beethoven's approach, it was changed and messed with. Most music enthusiasts would know that Beethoven was a eccentric man would felt that the fashion of the time should be remade into his image. So did the sonata forms change as well. In the Romantic Era the Baroque functions basically ceased and left more room for middle class performing and teaching. Generally speaking, things are changed by using forms already used, so when Beethoven died, his forms of music lived and ever so slightly get changed with time. So yes, at the beginning of the Romantic Era, the only thing that was going on was a continuation of the Bethoven generation. But it changed significantly after new composers starting innovating.

EDIT: there's a lot left out in what I just said, due to the fact that I could write 3 pages of stuff. I'm focusing of the Music-culture of Sonata forms in the Classical Era, that's what my paper is about.

I'm not a music theorist, true, but we're discussing historiography. I don't see what's so close-minded about wanting more than the years between which an artist was born and died to define his art. Expressionism is a 20th century painting form, but this doesn't bar El Greco from being, rightly, considered an Expressionist, despite having died in the 17th century. I don't really think Beethoven should be considered a Romantic - I think he should just be considered Beethoven - but he fits in with them better than with the Classical composers, regardless of when he died. He represents a break in continuity more than an extension of it, so I don't see why he should be classified as the latter.

I see what you mean, but I've already read the arguments and don't find them convincing - and I don't just mean the ones you've given here. At that point I find it's better to leave it at a matter of disagreement rather than rage and bang my head against a wall of criticism I'm not likely to dent. It's not very different from my attitude towards bands or directors I don't like; if someone tells me such and such a piece will change my mind I'm willing to give it a try, even if I am dubious, but in general I find my time's better spent ignoring it unless I intend to delve into it and form a major thesis, which I don't in most cases. Like this one.

well we recorded 4 songs, then we sent it to some mag, after that we where contacted by two labels, one which is pretty well known in holland in metalcore kinda stuff, so we got back to them, there's no financial risk for us whatsoever, we don't even have to sell 500, though we've allready got orders for over a 100 and the band can sell at least 100 to friends, then theres another 50 going to magazines and 50 going to clubs, and thats what the label does. the rest will be sold at shows, it's going to be a transparent cd (at least thats our idea) I might post up the artwork when its done (coming month.)
