don't know, but hellhammer is badass... maybe he's using double kicks on all of them at a time, like a multi-linked pedal or something.

I think the reason is: Having two primary bass drums that sound exactly the same for the main beats and DB, ect. and the other one would be triggered through a slave pedal which you would use when you wanted your bass drum to sound different.

Portnoy has too many drums. I can't shake the feeling that he'd sound like ass if he didn't have more drums sitting around him than Peter Criss and Neil Peart combined. He's got more drums in his set than Keith Moon ever destroyed. I want to see him try out something like the decaying set my school jazz band had. And, of course, I want him to fail, because I'm a bastard.
Dystopia's probably right. Hellhammer's pretty good, too, but it's a shame he's not in a single band I like.

They have 3 bass drums for different sounds. 2 can be used for double bass and the other for effects.

usually if you are having 3 basses, you will have something like 2 22" basses ech with single kicks, these are the basses you use most, but next to that you have a 20" with a double pedal so you can get a different sound when you so choose.
as for mike portnoy, I didn't think he was great until I saw Liquid drum Theatre, and then my respect for him went up ten fold, I think he is a pretty damn good drummer now.
shame he plays for dream theater.....

I heard Portney's drumset is actually one large set and a "mini" set next to it, hence the two thrones.

the LDT DVD is Mike Portnoys instructional video, it shows him playing the stuff that he plays in Dream theater and LTE, and then he breaks it down and shows you hwo to play sections of it. he also tals about drumming technique and other stuff.
and Essentialy his new kit IS a big and a mini kit, but it is all one drum kit, he has the 2 thrones so he can play the 'second' kit comfortably, without having to play in an awkward position

Portnoy does use a huge kit in DT, but if you check out LTE you'll realise he sounds good on smaller kits too. If you check out Liquid Drum Theater, you'll see he's only using 5 toms, 1 snare, 1 kick, and 10 cymbals or so (not sure I got it all, but it's pretty accurate). Compared to his DT kit, that's small. And LTE sounds good IMO.

I have a picture of one of portnoys sets and it has 3 sets mixed into one. But Terry Bozzio's is a different story

I saw terry bozzio in london playing with jeff beck, and he had far too many drums. somthing like 19 symbols, but there was a use for all of them, because at one point he had all of them going.

I saw a picture of a double pedal with three heads on it. It's in the back of Modern drummer magazine. It was just a small add and didn't explain anything though.

double pedal with 3 heads?
that would be the Dualist triple kick pedal, 2 of the beaters act like ordinary beaters, but the third, when you hit a heel switch on the main pedal, it will hit when the pedal comes up, I have never tried one as they don't ship to NZ but they are meant to be okay, but are frowned apon cause they are 'cheating' and because the 'up' hit sounds very quiet.
