Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black.
How heavy is this guitar sound for Eb tuning? I reckon it's probably the heaviest non-death metal album ever.
Other killer sounds:
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Morbid Angel - Gateways to Annihilation (Heretic's was shit, like the album)
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Grave - Back From The Grave

Another heavy one is Grave's guitar sound on "Into the Grave".
oh, and I also think Fear Factory's "Soul of a New Machine" album has one of the heaviest tones I've ever heard.

Unmerciful
Origin-S/T and Informis
Misery Index-Discordia

What era? There's pretty big differences between "Feel The Fire" to "The Years of Decay" to "W.F.O." to "Bloodletting", you know?
I actually haven't heard any particular tone that I just said to myself "I want that tone."
I like Dime's tone(s) on "Far Beyond Driven", Overkill's tone on "W.F.O.", the vintage tone of Rust In Peace (the original!), and as far as leads I'd actually go with Judas Priest's current live tone, then Albert King and Buddy Guy. As for cleans I have to go with Vai.

Dime has always had a sick tone...well up until damageplan. It wasn't his normal sound though....
anyways, disgorge has a sickass tone. You just have to break through and listen to em, but they are probably one the heaviest if not the heaviest bands I have ever heard. They tune to C, yet they use G chord structures...very sick.

Jcm 2000... you can get alot of thick gain out of it without cranking it beyond the scale.
as far as great band tones...
the tone lamb of god used on teh Burn the Priest album was absolutely brutal... i wish they would still use that tone today.
Decapitated... the chugs in 3 dimentional defect sound fuckin sick. and that smooth tone in the solo is sick too.
Necrophagist.... not so much the tone for the riffs... but the solos just sound so smooth and fluid.

The title track is heavier and sicker IMO... the gallop part, and then the riff with the squeals.

I know most of your comments, so what if you spared the green server some kilobytes, ey?
There is something about Vuorinens's (Nightwish) tone on their first album, Angels Falls First. Bright and brittle, rather than heavy but still lightyears away from rock'n'roll. Distinict. Piquant. Good, damnit.

I'm not sure about the rest of the gear, but I am pretty sure I read that a ProCo Rat was involved.
EDIT: Found this in an old thread here:

The riffing is a bit simple. But with that low of tones, you can't use chords or get really fast. So while the technical aspect of it is less than impressive (unelss you're talking about the time signatures), it's one hell of a sick sound.
Oh and by the way, if you want the heaviest sound on earth, use a Dive Bomb Whammy effect pedal at it's lowest. All you can hear is staticy rumbling. You won't even have to bother with writing riffs. Just bang on the strings.
|
I totally agree dude, the Nothing album was tuned to almost an octave below at F# and the opening riff to "Stengah" just shows you how well they have their tone down. It may not be the sickest tone but it's by far gotta be up there in the top 10 for the heaviest.
My favourite tones would have to be from:
Ion Dissonance's "Solace" album - I dunno what they use but it's a sound I haven't heard before...it's an ear shreddingly crystal glass sound...the palm mutes in that album are tighter than a beetles arse
Ingurgitating Oblivion - They have that type of tone that turns their tremolo picking into one long resonating note and muting from the bowls of hell imo. Plus the ending riff in "Veil of Perception" (i think) sounds so good.
Beneath the Massacre - Have a tone that is very good, it's the type of tone that allows you to distinguish every note thats being played even though it's distorted to fuckery. Also I'm not sure whether it's the tone soley or some post production but the tapping they do in their songs sounds so smooth...it sounds like another instrument completely.
and a few others:
MateriA
Despised Icon
Anaal Nathrakh
Spastic Ink

Yea Midian is pretty huge tonewise, lots and lots of tracks.
One of my personal favs for guitar tone is Blackwater Park.

Regaring the 'Heaviest Tone'
- Saw Nevermore back in 2001, Jeff Loomis got the SICKEST and HEAVIEST tone I heard out of what apparently was just a Line 6 POD. I guess other factors had to do with the sound as well, but that night was just perfect.
- The entire Heartwork-era Carcass guitar sound is what I go for when I think of 'good metal guitar tone.'
- Personally I prefer the Marshall extreme metal tones rather than the MESAs [MESAs just sound too airy and transparent for me and don't have enough clarity.] It'd be interesting though to try the new MESA Stilletos, their attempt to redefine 'Britsh valve' distortion...

Pat O'Briens guitar tone on Kill was the most brutal, crushing, and pummeling tone i've ever heard from any guitarist. it makes me just want to go out and Kill.
second would Dave Suzuki from vital remains on Dechristianize, that's just brutal. the solos on it are almost, FUCK!!, i love both the sounds so fucking much!

In terms of straight up heavy, Carnivore Diprosopus has by far one of the heaviest tones I've ever heard. When I first heard it, I was blown away. But in terms of more versatile, yet heavy all the same, Dying Fetus - Stop at Nothing has a real clean cut, ruthless, and unique tone to it. That's what I usually go for, ballsy (of course) but tight and clean at the same time.

Ermm.. Can't really name a band.. Amps that can give you a sick tone:
Why do you define as sick tone.. personally I like a Thick, warm, fat bottom end but cutting tight sound. No band is really coming to me off the top of my head.. haha.

Sickest, most brutal guitar tone........I'd have to say 'Decency Defied' -Cannibal Corpse and 'Internal Primates Forever' - Mudvayne (mainly the opening riff).

Immolation - Close to a World Below. I like the way the weird String Scraping riffs sound.
Gorguts - From Wisdom to Hate. I love how you can hear all the strings ringing out.
ooooo and fuckin....whats their name...Fuck. Arsis has a nice sound to them on Celebration of Guilt.
And last but not least, Al Di Meola on Casino. Fucking Brilliant.
