5150s- More geared for Melodic Metal?
I keep seeing more bands like Arch Enemy or In flames using em. As a fan of thrash as testament, artillery, holy terror, vio-lence, exhorder and death metal like decapitated, will this thing be able to pull it off with or without mods (which mods)? Or should I just say fuck it and go for the 60 watt engl (I plan on playing medium sized places)

I've heard it played for a couple seconds. Im debating whether to buy a 5150 get tubes replaced for a total of prolly around 500 (ebay) or spend 1200 on a fireball thats 60 watt

my vote goes for the engl mainly because everybody and their mom plays 5150's these days... that and i think engl's sound better.
any style of distorted music will suit the 5150...

Yeah, it will.
I dont think the 5150 sounds very good stock. I think it fits hardcore much better than death metal. Without mods, its a piece of shit (IMO) for death metal. I'm just a dumbass though.
If I had the money, I would definetly go with the engl.

I played one again yesterday, but everytime I play one it seems worse.
Ok.
this time I played it in a store where they had a VHT Pitbull, Framus Cobra, Engl Powerball, Engl Savage, Engl Special Edition, Orange 120, Peavey JSX, H&K Triamp II, H&K Warp-X, Mesa Triple Recto's and a fucking Soldano SLO100!!!
Raaah! I went crazy, I spend like 4 hours there trying all amps and amp/cab combinations. the 5150 sounds like mud compared to most of those amps, there's just punch missing, sure it's loud but it's like one big fuzz, No tight tone, not even at moderate volumes. If you do get it modded I bet it would sound better since it can't get much worse stock!
All in perspective, they have Marshalls too, but I don't care for them so I didn't play them also I finally tried the BV300H, but didn't like it much, you can't crank it because its so rediculously loud, I mean a 120w tube top is rediculously loud and you'll never have it further then like 50% of the volume, but damn, 300watts is just too much. its like playing an amp thats on 5% of its volume and thats not where tube amps are good at IMO. the lower wattage BV's are better.
If you're ever in germany, this is the store: http://www.musik-produktiv.de/mp/mp...p/sid/!06082002
they have allmost every high-end amp and about 40 cabinets you can try them with (you can multi-link them too, they're all hooked up so you can switch cabs instantly and shit!!)

Not quite, learn to eq.. and add an eq and bbe sonic maximizer in the loop like i said, just clears it up and tightens the lowend.
Def, did you play the JSX??
If so how was it?

It didnt seem like it could quite reach what I wanted when I played it.
And I played that JSX last night. It was ok. Pretty much just like a XXX just costs more.

Yeh, the JSX is a heavily modded XXX.
For what you want the ENGL would be choice.
If you already own the 5150 and like it then keep it. Dosent matter what band(s) play it.

Even for hardcore, I feel 5150 isn't really too great. Marshalls seem to be the only place where I can really find distorted tones I like and even with them I have issues. Although I don't like Mesas, they sound nice in recordings. I have no experience with ENGL. This all could be do partly to the store's guitars and their sucky stock pick ups though.

exactly, if you like it, then fuck what everyone thinks, 'bands' playing it shouldn't be a reason to buy an amp.
Anyways, the JSX is one of the only peavey's I ever liked. not for the distortion channel though, thats just as lame as the 5150's : it seemed more refined overall, but I don't know if it's worth the price difference, I didn't really look at prices, most top I played there where over 2000 bucks. the peaveys where in some dark corner lol, oh, and if you ever get the chance, compare a 5150 cab (or any peavey cab) to an engl/mesa/orange cab, the difference is incredible!!! (I didn't expect it to be such a big deal, I know, it'll change the tone but this was just incredible.)

yeah, mesa cabs are really nice. The trad. recto cabinet is really focused and bassy, i like it better than the modern one.
