Some questions about getting better in screaming and technique...

Hello guys,

I just have a few questions about screaming:

1. Do you get better by just practising or do you have to optimize your technique? Because when I hear the first Children of Bodom Album for Example, the singers voice didn't change much until their newest album. So, shouldn't the sound of his voice be better these days?

2. My mic goes directly into the computer, is the quality much better, when I have a mixer in between?

3. Just a question for the people who can growl well:
How do you shape your mouth when growling exactly and what muscles do you tense? Do you use the "vocal fry" technique or what else?

I'll hope for many answers ^^

ah man did you miss the screaming/growling tip thread or what? anyways ill be a nice guy here and answer, even though i personally cant scream at all.

1. alexi's vocals HAVE changed. they are lower and more solid sounding. some like it some hate it but there is a definite change between something wild and trashed lost and strungout. theres nothing wrong with trying to change your vocals for the better. besides, like it or not, theyre going to change after you do it for years

2. if you dont put echo or turn the volume down or something mic direct to comp is going to sound terrible. very sudden and loud. id recommend a preamp if you get serious about it

3. shaping the mouth is important. for higher pitched screams raise your eyebrows. that works for singing, too. purse your lips to do a gorguts "erosion of sanity" growl. make a tiny hole for air and use your diaphragm for frank mullen vocals. use your diaphragm and your lungs together, but dont give yourself a hernia

i hope you realize thats probably the longest post ive ever made and i dont even do vocals.

2. Oh! My friends told me it doesn't sound bad... I have to look for a preamp.
And yes, I AM serious. For about half a year and I'm going to take serious in the future, too

Thank you for your tips. I read the screaming/growling thread but my questions weren't answered there.
I'm waiting for further tips ^^

no problem. if youve got a good soundcard you probably dont need a preamp anyways. you could always get cooledit or something and add cool effects too

What is cooledit? Is it freeware?

And my soundcard is a SoundBlaster Live! Player 1024. Do you know if it's good for recording?

i dont know anything about which soundcards are good.... sorry. cooledit is a really expensive recording program, i got mine for free from a friend though. look into it, or at the very least cakewalk or something, just so you can play around with effects

I pirated cooledit and its fine. All over the place. You need to use a compressor, it will really help if you make the vocals nice and tight. Preamp, EQ, Compressor, they are all ideal for singing.
