Talking Good compositions

in my quest to create a unique style, i have tried to search out really good guitarists and analyze their styles. i think that if everybody here were to compose something that completely defines their style, all of us would have a bunch to learn and to alter our styles where we think someone has done a phenomenal job phrasing/composing. it would be great if, when you post, you include rhythm as well as solo parts. if you guys can do this, i would be extremely greatful; i love integrating stuff from other people's styles into mine. don't worry, i'll post some of mine up too

so, in order to achieve an incredibly unique style that is all your own, you're analyzing other guitarists styles?

Maybe he didn't mean to say something contradictory, but 'unique' and 'all your own,' i.e., 'belonging solely to you' are pretty synonymous.

Anyway, as regards the topic: I'd hazard a guess that most of the people here don't have well defined styles and are more in an incubative state. I certainly wouldn't say that I myself had a well-defined, unique style.

Is a pink 7string Gibson Explorer with a Kahler trem and yellow cucumbers painted on it unique? I would guess it would be.

If I buy an RG570 in my local music store, I'm the only owner of it right? Is it unique?

The first case is an example of where you've borrowed bits and pieces from other things, and put them together as a unique thing.
The second case is an example of something that is "all my own" that is not very unique.

I rest my case.

All you did was prove you could misread somebody else strongly enough that your point would be proven if nobody came by to point out the fallacies in your logic. If you want to explain to me the style that's analogous to the RG570, or how physical property can ever be truly analogous to intellectual property, then, maybe, you'll have proven your point.

Now, before we get too far off, I don't think it's impossible, or even ill-advised, to reach your own style by taking what you like from the great, and even the mediocre, players that came before you. It's like the Academy painters who were trained by imitations of other painters' styles, and there's certainly few enough other ways to learn, or even to want to pick up the guitar. I just don't think that there's anything wrong with Insomnium finding the way it was phrased here a bit odd.

Hah, I fucking love GP4 and 3. I've made so much shit with them. Here's a few things. I try to make as weird of stuff as possible and I love going off beat (these might not show it though). I like to focus more on rhythms rather than just leads. Oh ya, forgive that really high pitched sound in Untitled2. I should take it out some day. Also, I may have simple or impossible stuff but it is all for the ears, not so much for actual playing. This stuff is all over the place with influences so don't expect really heavy stuff. Most of the stuff I make only lasts a few riffs too (if it is even anymore than one). It's all for reference.

More food for thought. Ya, the bass in Untitled18 is a banjo. Bassiest midi instrument I could find. I need to work on a lot of this crap, like I stated earlier. I know what you mean by analyzing other players. I do that a lot too. If you don't have GP4, I'll tab some of the highlight riffs if you want.

OK, this isn't really metal, but it's some stuff I've been working on for a while. It's quite funny, not to be taken too sereously...

Guitar Pro, you can get a trial version at either www.guitarpro.com or www.mysongbook.com I think. The trial version will work even after it has expired.

Technically, if you think about it, nobody has their own "individual" style...we all listen to other guitarists and integrate what we like about their playing into ours...its what we choose to imitate and to throw out that make our playing unique. take Marty Friedman for example. he didn't actually "invent" the asiatic stuff that he plays, he simply integrated that into his playing. But is it his own distinctive style? why not? he played the asiatic stuff and just threw out the stuff he didn't like and kept the stuff that he did, and so it became his own style. that's what i want to do.

It's basically looking at other people and not only taking from them but also being inspired from them. After listening to one song, I took a tapping lick but from it inspired me to create a legato lick from it.
