WTF Is Math-Metal????
What is considered math-metal? I normally don't bother tryin' to classify stuff, but I have heard this term and it sounds kind of silly. The only band I can remember being called this was The Dillinger Escape Plan. I LOVE them, but they don't sound like anyone else, so what the fuck?

Meshuggah. It's metal with odd time signatures and note groupings such as quintuplets. It feels very odd, the first time I heard it I got scared because it really trows one off, completely unpredictable shit.

All the Meshuggah I heard kicks ass, and I love Dillinger, so yeah, I guess I could accept that it's the best.

I wouldn't call Meshuggah "math-metal." Math-metal bands use many different riffs per song, and have complex song structures, like Dillinger. I think Necrophagist would be a prime example. The keyword is complexity.
The first band to call themselves "math-metal"? Mudvayne.

I first head it applied to Meshuggah a few years ago. It's one of those stupid, silly, and unnecessary genre distinctions used to over-compartmentalize music.

Is Tool math-metal?
And there is a local band here that call themselves math metal. They suck.

Yes, Meshuggah are one of these bands that sorta, defy classification in a way. Such as Mastodon. Dillinger Escape Plan.. etcetera.
Sub-genres are useful in most cases, but "math metal" is just too broad.

Tool usually have a decently defined structure. they dont use a general verse-->chorus---->verse--->chorus--->solo---->chorus kind of thing, but they do have structure.
Norma Jean is a good math metal / hardcore band, for all you lovers of DEP

oh man. Jazzcore, Mathcore, Mathmetal, its all the smae. Bands like Dillinger, Anata, The Red Chord. Its shit.
Very complex, many time changes, riffs come from nowhere and even genre changes flow freely, its a mess, some people call it noisecore. but people that call it noisecore are fags because thats the opposite.
meshuggah is math metal either.

Anata aren't math metal, they're just straight up technical death. Math metal tends to consist of bands that you could class as 'technical hardcore', I suppose, due to the hardcore style vocals and complex riffs - DEP being a point in case.

Well I say anything very technical such as that can be put under math, no longer death. As in, Tech Death is a form of math metal. Math metal, to me, isnt only about stupid time sigs and shit like that, its also crazyly tech stuff. It all takes a clear and strong mind as well as musicianship. Think of Tech death like this - Tech death is complex, like some kind of puzzle. Fuck , you know, I dont know where the hell im gonna go from that. You win, LOL.
All I have to say is that Anata can be blurred from Tech death to matchore IMO. But thats off topic. I know that I can distinguish what definitely is Math to what definitely isnt.
Math - Uphill Battle, DEP, The Red Chord....
Not Math - Tool, Deicide, every other fucking band out there.

I don't see Meshuggah as math metal but rather just metal with odd time signatures. The Dillanger's Escape Plan becomes predictable after a 2nd listen too...

I'm thinking Liquid Tension Experiment, Spastic Ink, Dillinger Escape Plan etc. - I like these bands. A lot.
"Math metal". How unnecessary. I was just reading some reviews at metalinjection.net and I found this:
"However, one big complaint with the whole "math-metal" genre is everything sounds so similar and repetitive."
That was the single stupidest sentence I've ever read in a review. It all sounds the same... because it's continually changing? Because it's so goddamn variable? What nonsense. Pure brain cripple.

I agree with FBS.
Math metal to me is jazz-like time signatures, complex riffs, 'jagged' dissonant chords, not much downtuning and - I think one of the main reasons why I don't class technical death metal as math metal - hardcore vocals. As I said, 'technical hardcore' if you will.
Dillinger Escape Plan satisfy all of the above and, to me, are the finest exponents of this style of music. I'm pretty sure that math metal arose due to an innovative section of the hardcore community adopting some of the influences that propagated the death metal scene of 1998/99.

I'd desribe LTE as just progressive. Possibly adding rock to that, but just possibly.

And Myung swapped out for some other dude. A bald old guy.
But yeah, 3/4 of LTE makes 3/5 DT. (And no, math people out there, don't interpret that as LTE<DT, because I haven't given LTE a good listen yet, so i have no opinion in the matter)

I heard Dillinger Escape Plan, i thought that it sounded like someone having a seizure while rolling down a hill, it was pretty confusing. It did sound technical as hell, it kind of sounded like different riffs, at different speeds all put together into one song. It is pretty fast though, i wonder how they pull this off live without fucking up.

Not only do they pull it off flawlessly live, they do so while their bodies are in a constant state of chaotic flailing limbs and jagged movement. Their musicianship is truly an awesome sight to behold.
The thing with DEP is that you have to listen to it for an extended period of time in order for it to make sense. The musical patterns are so complex that it appears random at first but as you delve deeper into the music, it all falls into place in spectacular fashion.
As for DEP being repetitive, everytime I listen to one of their albums I hear something new that I haven't noticed before.

Well I'm with whoever said mathcore sounds all the same. Its a bunch of riffs thrown together with total disregard for song structure IMO.
However DEP have some better linear songs which i do like. Like um, The Mullet Burden, I love secret agents [that song rocks] and some other song. I just got used to them guess. I really dont like Mathcore though.
All IMO.

I can't even imagine playing something like that live. So much practise in getting all the timings right. Math metal, and technical death metal are probably my favorite genres right now. It interests me.

Math metal is basically metal designed to pull out your brain, throw it in a blender for 5 minutes and then put it back in your head. But I thought it was called Mathcore? I'm already confused and Im not even listening to it
