I'm keen to talk about real gangs and drivebys, but we don't have to meet for that. About two weeks ago, this kid I went to school with (we were in the same grade, he was a year older than me) got shot outside a library that's within 5 minutes walking distance from my house. He (Anderson Rosa) was a cool kid and he wasn't a troublemaker. He volunteered at a local youth center teaching kids how to play basketball (basketball sucks, but that's hardly the point). He was always very friendly. He seemed to show up out of nowhere when I was 13, we were never like best friends, but he told me a lot about his background. He told me he was from an African country (I forgot the name, but his obituary in the local newspaper said it was Angola) and that his dad lived in Portugal. He told me his mom lived back in Angola. He was staying with his grandmother at the time.
He showed up in the middle of 8th grade. I saw him sporadically throughout high school, when I did he was always just as friendly and energetic as when we were in 8th grade. His obituary also said he was on the wrestling team, but I don't remember that. He was a great conversationalist, despite his accent and a stutter. He always had something to talk about. I also would stroll through there often on my nightly walks. Nobody ever bothered me, although occasionally I would see groups of people hanging out and eyeballing me. It always seemed as if they were eyeballing me out of nervousness rather than malice. They never bothered me, and when I walked by them, they would usually give me the half-hearted "what's up" or "hey" that you usually give to somebody you don't really know but say anyway to break up tension. Another time some tall, burly, middle-aged balding white guy who was really drunk came up to me and tried to buy cocaine off of me. When I explained to him that I didn't sell drugs, he told me I spoke very good English, so he probably thought I was Hispanic or something.
Anyway, because he lived in a shitty area, he probably had some acquaintances who were seedy. I myself have had friends over the years who grew up to be drug dealers and gang members. He would have been forced to interact with these people regularly because of where he lived. I'm assuming he got shot because he might have been an acquaintance to a gang member and/or drug dealer who had some enemies, and they took it out on him. It's also possible he gave in to his surroundings and started doing or dealing drugs, but that seems HIGHLY unlikely.
Here's where the driveby part comes in. A few nights later, there is a makeshift wake for Anderson outside his grandmothers house, and people who knew him showed up. While these people congregate to grieve over a life senselessly lost, a green sedan with no license plates pulls ups and 2 gunmen fire 8 rounds into the crowd of mourners. Worthless pieces of shit. Some of the residents followed the vehicle, and additional shots were fired (presumably AT the offenders by the residents). Nobody was hurt during that incident.
Also, one night before Anderson was killed, another kid was killed, but the other kid had legitimate ties to drug dealing and gangs (apparently he also had cocaine and wads of cash on him, but that's just what I've heard).
How's that for gangs and drive-bys?

Holland? I would love to go and meet everyone that could make it. At least I would know some poeple and I will pitch in for booze too. We could go to a gig, then the pub, and then pass out in the woods ( camping ). On my next deployment I hope I get the chance to visit some new parts of Europe and get close enough to meet some of you. That would be cool.

Anyway, I forgot to mention PST because I didn't know he still comes whoring around this board...but when his name is mentioned he always seems to come out of the bushes. 
Meeting everyone would probably be extremely awkward at first...but I'm sure once there would be alcohol/drugs involved that would soon change....hell we'd probably all get arrested for something stupid.

too bad they didnt get a flat tire and then get shot up in the car. thats a shame, chris, but the kids who get involved in drug dealing and all that deserve whatever they get. its the inocent ones that are a real sad fact of life in a less than perfect neighborhood
