Looking for a new guitar. I dont know much about which are good and which arent, I've never needed to take any notice - I played the same acoustic for 3 years then got an electric 2 years ago. So I need to know which guitars are good, I have about £250 ($400ish) to spend and have been looking at guitars for this price and I like a few (BC Rich Kerry King flying V being my favourite) but need to know which are actually any good. What are the best, easy to find guitars that sound good and look good?

Well, No. It's not a good guitar at all. The bridges have a major design defect that eventually ruin the whole guitar. The B.C. Rich NJ KKV and above models are not that bad but that is beyond your price range I'm afraid.

for £250 its sounds like ure best bet for a kickass guitar is second hand. Try and get an old Aria pro 11 magna series guitar, they rock, an ibanez rg would also be a very good idea. Could prob get a good one new for your money if lucky. As for the bc rich, i personally stay well away from them cos they all basicly suck ass, well lower models that is (platinum and bronze), the only guitar worth buyin is a nj ironbird or a higher usa series.

I got lucky with a pre 90's RG750, that was like the prestige Ibanez RG of its day, DiMarzio's, white binding around headstock/neck, sharkfin inlays, oldskool Edge tremolo, gotoh tuners, good shit, got that all for cheap.

IF you're lucky there might be some nice RG550/570's for sale in your price range.

Does the type of RG matter? I've just found a Ibanez RG370DX MW for £240, knowing my luck it's a pile of crap.

RG370DX's suck. they go for 350 bucks new, so 240 pounds is you beeing ripped off, if it's used.

I would go around looking for a used RG550/570, preferably older models. the lower series RG's have bad tremolo's and even crappier pickups, they're worthless.

So basically there isn't a guitar meeting my specifications - easy to find, around £250 and good guitar. I don't want a used guitar, I've had bad experience in the past buying used guitars. And I don't have much time on my hands to look everywhere.

I've bought all my gear used, everything, I've got more then 5000 bucks worth of used gear and NONE of it was crappy... it just depends on what you're getting.

I mean, for around 400 euro's theres no decent guitar I can think of, unless you want a starter model like a RGdx, low end LTD or a crummy BC Rich.
If I where on a budget, I'de definetly go used.

Well you can "Pull A FearFrost", and keep your eyes open on ebay for a Dime333 (or a differnet guitar) to go cheap, and snag it.

exactly, and that's quality stuff so there can't be much wrong with them except for lousy tubes. as long as you buy quality used stuff and keep your eyes open, buying used is the way to go (well at least, for me)

You must make time. Buying a guitar without looking around and learning about them first is the mother of all these shit guitars being built in the first place. Don't buy them. Eventually guitar companies will get the ideal that poeple don't like these shit made guitars and will not buy them; forcing the company to make a better product. I know that you want a new guitar and I believe you can still find one for a good price, but be ready to maybe replace the pickups as some good guitars just have bad ones. It is easy to get riped off on used guitars but there are also some good ones to be found.

a guitar is more then just pickups though, started models all have lousy hardware and crap electronics, the overall build quality is just shit, thats the only way they can keep them cheap.

I know what you mean. I found this Ibanez 7 string ( RG 7POS series )at a pawn shop last year. The poor thing looked as if it had been owned by some koRn kid. It needed some love and I also wanted a project guitar. I got it for $100 and completely rebuilt this thing. The wood and finish were the only things good on it. Everything else I replaced, including a refret job. It's now a decent guitar after $200 later.

Thank you, there are still huge pile of them on eaby real cheap, dime stealth going for 120 us, slime dime333 from 97 going for 350, but its a buy now for 450 (US), but the best time to look on ebay is just before school starts, collage kids going to school and need cash, you can walk off with a nice guitar that way, or right after Xmas kids got better guitars, and selling them beacuse they don't want the old one anymore...
