descenting chromatic excersise. Help`?
Hi.
When playing descented chromatic excersises, kind of like this one - for example
||-14-13-12-11-----------------------------------------------------|
||---------------13-12-11-10---------------------------------------|
||-----------------------------12-11-10-9--------------------------|
||------------------------------------------etc---------------------|
||------------------------------------------------------------------|
||------------------------------------------------------------------|
Do you, when starting on the C(13), on the b string, do you put all four fingers on their respective frets, or just the pinky first, and the the rest, as you fret, and hit the string.
Same with just descending with chromatics on the high e f.ex.
See what i'm saying?

put all four fingers then lift them up as you descend...seems more efficient to me

I'd say only fret with the fingers you're actually using. Makes it easier to do things like 13-11-12-10, IMO.

You should keep all your fingers down as often as possiable for cleaner playing, but if theres no diffrence in sound do whats comfortable.

I think if you just play each note at a time slowly so you get used to playing it better, it helps with your speed playing alot. I've never actually tried just resting my fingers and lifting them in that way before...interesting.

It's still descending chromatics, even if you don't play the notes in sequence, as the overall tone is chromatic. Besides, it's best not to get into bad habits. Keep your 'spare' fingers lightly touching the strings - not fretting them - unless your about to play a pull-off.

yeah, I always done it the way most of you say. One finger at a time.
That's what i'm used too anyway, and it's the way I can play the fastest.
A song to illustrate would be john petruccis version of flight of the bumblebee.

It depends. I do these kind of exercises all of the time. When I start out, I'll generally put all of my fingers down. I then slowly speed up. When I hit break-neck speed, I place them one at a time.
